Executive VP & Chief Legal Officer Duties: Advising on a range of corporate legal issues and matters affecting the organization. Functions as a trusted advisor to Senior Management, providing legal expertise and advice on a wide range of strategic, tactical and operational issues related to our nationwide single family home rental portfolio. Oversees local counsel in regions throughout the U.S. to administer various contractual interactions. Coordinates legal matters with outside counsel and advises the COO on the need to outsource legal counsel. Maintains and monitors long-range operating plans, budget, departmental goals, objectives, policies and programs as they relate to the Legal and Compliance organizational function. Advises management with respect to legal issues related to the development and implementation of business strategy. Develops and implements strategies to protect the company from lawsuits, thereby minimizing expenses. Analyzes new market/product opportunities and conducts legal risk assessments. Anticipates and guards against any impending legal risks that may impact business operations. In coordination with other lines of business, develops policies for the organization. Develops and recommends company policy and position on legal and compliance issues. Represents in all legal matters (lawsuits, depositions, hearings, etc.). Studies and interprets laws and court decisions as they may impact the business. Stays abreast of any changes, especially those related to consumer protection. Ensures department budget is maintained to achieve expense controls and profitability. Ensures departmental and organizational objectives are met and in line with the needs and mission of the organization. Recommends and maintains an organizational structure and staffing levels to accomplish company goals and objectives. Works with the COO and CFO to ensure the proper types and levels of insurance are in place. Qualifications: J.D. Degree / equivalent law degree at an accredited U.S. Law School is required. Must have passed a state BAR exam. 5+ years of experience as a corporate attorney for a company or law firm is required. Experience as top legal officer is preferred. Real Estate industry experience on a national scale is preferred. Experience in a startup organization or participating in an IPO is desired.
