Managing Counsel, In-House Insurance Defense The candidate will be responsible for oversight of the operation of Houston and San Antonio Staff Counsel law offices assuring a culture of high quality legal work at a competitive cost and providing exceptional service to clients and the company. Coordinates with Regional Counsel and peers to promote a high performance culture throughout the Staff Counsel Program. Manages human resources matters, including but not limited to staffing, performance management, compensation and professional development. Accountable for success of Staff Counsel Initiatives, such as trial appetite, resolution management, and improvement in all lines of business. Provides/arranges for effective on boarding of lawyers and staff; training; and mentoring. Participates fully in the development of entire law office staff and viable succession slates for management and product case handling by providing meaningful assignments and thoughtful IDP process. Handles a minimal caseload as determined in consultation with the Regional Counsel. Represents insureds and the company by employing methods and strategies commensurate with the provision of high quality legal and customer services. Possesses strong lawyering skills, including trial skills. Personally complies with all elements of Staff Counsel Program's case management guidelines and ensures same from all lawyers and staff members. Ensures that attorneys and staff adhere to high ethical standards professionalism, and integrity. Creates structure for the review of new files and assignment to counsel with the appropriate skill level. Creates structure for reviews of open files according to established quality management protocol and schedule, and to ensure professional file handling. Partners with the Claim Department on long-term goals and strategies, case handling oversight, and ad hoc matters as they arise. Develops professional relationships with all business partners across the enterprise, including Claim Centers, SIU, Risk Control, non-Staff Counsel Claim legal partners, Human Resources, Underwriting, Marketing and Agents, CAEs and Actuarial. Leverages these relationships to deliver the most value to clients. Uses communications skills, both oral and written, in the litigation process and in business relationships. Utilizes office resources and technology to assure a smooth workflow and cost effectiveness. Accountable for continually improving the counsel comparison metrics for own office, i.e., referral rates, expenses, indemnity, total cost in all lines of business, etc. Analyzes and utilizes management information to drive performance and execute upon value proposition strategies. Completes and submits all required reports, time records, expense reimbursements requests and other materials appropriate to performance of job duties in a timely manner. Complies with budgetary limitations, productivity standards, and all other administrative aspects of the position. Serves as part of the Staff Counsel Leadership team by providing meaningful and thoughtful input to program-wide initiatives and by chairing committees on selected projects. Participates in Regional Reviews as a member of the Staff Counsel National Review Team. Handles national projects, attends management meetings and contributes to Staff Counsel Program initiatives, as requested by Regional Counsel or Head of Staff Counsel.

The candidate should have completed Graduation from an accredited law school with strong academic record. Must have 10 years of successful law practice experience. Admission to, and uninterrupted good standing with, a court of competent jurisdiction is needed. should have superior writing skills Outstanding verbal persuasive ability. Inspirational presentation skills that thoroughly demonstrate business acumen Diplomatic business partner skills are needed. Must have ability to effectively utilize all available technology resources/. Role model the usage of VRT, LMA, and Counsel Comparison database Demonstrates personal accountability that influences the team to perform in a similar manner. Exhibits relentless drive to meet deadlines and expectations Superior business acumen and financial fluency are needed.
