Privacy and Compliance Counsel The candidate will take the lead in ensuring the data protection and privacy requirements of the business are met from a legal, training and policy perspective (partnering with others, notably the IT department) to ensure compliance with global data protection and privacy laws, in particular the GDPR. Will be responsible for global compliance with privacy and data protection laws, with particular emphasis on EMEA and GDPR compliance. Identify data protection risk areas within the business and implement policies and procedures to minimise these, including around data access and retention. Conduct privacy impact assessments and promoting a culture of Privacy-By-Design and Privacy-By-Default. Conduct training on data protection issues. Draft and maintain templates for data protection documents (e.g. data transfer agreements, privacy/data protection clauses for commercial agreements, etc.). Partner regularly with the IT Security Department on privacy and security issues. Assist with data subject access requests and data breach procedures. Liaise with regulators (e.g. Data Protection Authorities) and outside counsel, as needed. Partner with the business to develop and leverage Privacy as a Go-To-Market differentiator. Conduct data protection compliance audits and deal with any follow-up to ensure best practice. Build and maintain a data protection knowledge base. Deal with any ad-hoc projects relating to privacy and/or data protection laws. Assist with ad-hoc compliance tasks and projects, including matters relating to codes of conduct, anti-bribery, 3rd party vetting and controls, internal investigations, etc. The candidate should be qualified to practice law in England or another EU jurisdiction, with City or top law firm training. Ideally be a qualified lawyer with experience gained either in house or private practice in the area of privacy / data protection. 4-8 years of overall legal experience in data protection/privacy law. Must have exposure to international data protection and privacy laws. Must have experience with supervising outside counsel. Good communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills is required. Experience with data protection and compliance issues faced by US headquartered technology company internationally is preferred. Technology/IT interest or skills (e.g. Cloud architecture familiarity) is preferred. Foreign language capability is preferred. A mix of law firm and in-house experience preferably in the technology industry.
