Associate General Counsel -Litigation The candidate handles claims and litigation matters, including medical malpractice, employment, commercial and other types of litigation, arbitration and mediation.Handles peer review matters and government investigations. Provides accurate and timely legal advice to clients and provides excellent client service. Develops excellent professional relationships with outside counsel and manages outside counsel with respect to specific litigation within Associate General Counsel s portfolio. Provides legal training and risk management education to employees, attending physicians, nurses, medical residents, risk managers, and others throughout the Health System as needed and/or requested by Director, Claims and Litigation or the Deputy General Counsel. Drafts, approves and provides education on system-wide policies and procedures as needed and/or requested by Director, Claims and Litigation or the Deputy General Counsel. Obtains and maintains expertise with respect to UH insurance portfolio including its captive insurer. Maintains expertise regarding all applicable UH insurance coverages with respect to litigation; maintains excellent relationship with applicable insurers. Provides legal support to UH, its subsidiaries, affiliates and physicians insured through the UH Sponsored Physician Program. As requested, serves as staff to appropriate System boards and committees and/or provides reports to applicable subsidiary and/or affiliated Board and committees. Provides supervisory oversight of the paralegals and administrative staff as needed. Handles special projects and other job responsibilities as assigned by the Director, Claims and Litigation, Deputy General Counsel and/or the Chief Legal Officer. Completes tasks within budget and with minimal supervision. Keeps Director, Claims and Litigation, Deputy General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer timely informed of all substantive/material developments for matters within Associate General Counsel s portfolio. Attends all Department meetings and actively contributes to and participates in the same. Properly exercises any applicable settlement authority pursuant to UH and Law Department policies.

The candidate should have Juris Doctorate Degree. Must be licensed in the State of Ohio, and be in good standing. Must have 8+ years of substantive legal experience in litigation area. Experience with complex litigation and medical malpractice litigation is preferred. Large law firm and/or in-house legal counsel experience with large organization is preferred. Litigation management experience a plus. Must be able to handle multiple tasks and projects at once. Excellent written and oral communication skills and organizational skills required. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point required. Working knowledge of legal database tools required.
