Corporate Counsel The candidate will provide legal advice to business partners under state insurance laws and regulations in connection with the maintenance of fixed and variable annuities and fixed and variable life insurance products, including providing day-to-day legal advice to the business partners on state insurance regulatory aspects related to retail life and annuities, group insurance products, and distribution. Provide legal advice via daily contact with annuity and life business partners and through completion of various assignments as an individual or as part of a team including: research and analysis of laws that relate to and impact the business, identifying and quantifying risks, handling market conduct examinations and other regulatory matters with state insurance departments, providing compliance advice on applicable laws. Collaborate with other attorneys within the Law Department, as appropriate, on various matters. Educate business partners on legal developments affecting the business and provide innovative strategies to address those developments. Handle complex legal matters, analyze legal (and business, where applicable) issues, draft legal documents, and negotiate matters and solve intricate problems using sound legal judgment and expertise with minimal or no supervision. Build and maintain client relationships with diplomacy and by providing concise, insightful, timely, pragmatic, and proactive counsel. Prepare, initiate, advocate, and effectively present legal points and recommendations to influence clients and to represent clients as legal counsel. Conduct legal research and gather matter-related information from various sources. Continuously seek to improve own legal skills and subject matter expertise. Work on or lead projects or cross-functional teams. The candidate must have JD degree and strong academic credentials. Admitted to practice in New York State or as in-house counsel is required. Should have 3-7 years practice post bar admission. Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to handle multiple projects and assignments effectively is needed. Relevant practice and experience is preferred. Leadership aptitude and interest in developing management competencies is helpful.
