Intellectual Property Counsel

Intellectual Property Counsel The candidate will be responsible for advising internal clients and managing outside counsel on a wide range of legal and intellectual property matters, including patent portfolio management, trademark portfolio management, technology agreements, and due diligence support. Provides counsel relating to, and strategic management of, the Company's worldwide patent and trademark portfolios, including clearance and usage. Provides counsel to the Company's management and scientific teams regarding intellectual property matters. Drafts, reviews, negotiates, and advises on intellectual property contracts including, but not limited to: confidentiality agreements, material transfer agreements, service agreements, and licenses. Provides counsel and support of corporate development initiatives, including intellectual property due diligence for potential mergers and acquisitions. Develops a thorough understanding of and familiarity with the Company's business, its people, technology, markets, facilities, customers and competitors in order to assist with the achievement of business objectives. Provides training and makes presentations to Company personnel regarding intellectual property legal issues. Manages outside counsel and legal expense budgets. Performs other duties as assigned.

The candidate should have a Jurist Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA-accredited law school, and membership in good standing of North Carolina or other state bar is required. Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience in either a corporate or law firm setting. Background and/or experience in chemistry, biotechnology, or biology is preferred. Excellent critical thinking and decision-making skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills, with an ability to work well in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and interact effectively with internal and external business partners. Ability to exercise independent judgment, and to work with and maintain confidential and sensitive information. Ability to manage a large portfolio and variety of claims and projects. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Local candidates, strongly preferred.
