Litigation Senior Supervising Attorney Responsibilities: Responsible for hiring, directing, coaching, mentoring, attorneys, fellows, and/or paralegals. Supervisory functions include overseeing workflow, evaluating and managing performance including setting goals and objectives, providing mentoring and professional development opportunities, making recommendations for promotions and compensation adjustments, handling discipline and responding to grievances from staff under their supervision. Manage, lead, and support complex refugee and immigrants rights litigation, work closely with teams of staff attorneys, fellows, paralegals, direct services attorneys, and co-counsel from law firms and other non-profit organizations. Undertake all aspects of such litigation, including preparing pre-litigation memoranda; drafting pleadings, briefs, and declarations; interviewing clients; managing discovery, including taking and defending depositions; handling oral argument and evidentiary hearings; and reaching out to and providing informational material to affected communities. Develop and initiate new litigation to assist with refugees and other displaced persons. Stay abreast of developments in the law and practice that affect refugees and other displaced persons. Represent IRAP at conferences, in the media, and in public speaking engagements. Participate in and lead internal organizational tasks that support the organization and the department through a period of growth and innovation.

Qualifications: Law degree and license to practice law in New York. If a candidate is moving to New York for the position and is not licensed to practice in New York, willingness to apply for the New York Bar. 5+ years out of law school. The title for this position will depend on the candidate s experience level. Experience playing a significant role in litigating complex civil cases and class actions. Experience with immigration law and/or Administrative Procedure Act litigation is a plus. Commitment to developing a thoughtful and effective supervisory relationship with supervisees, including managing supervisees workflow and performance, providing feedback, and structuring professional development opportunities. Prior supervisory experience is preferred. Strong research, writing, and analytical skills. Ability to develop new and creative legal theories. Strong interpersonal and communications skills. Prior experience working with vulnerable populations and survivors of trauma preferred. Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage a high volume workload and to respond to urgent situations. Interest in working in a dynamic and innovative office that seeks to respond effectively to changing landscape and needs. Fluency in oral and written English. Additional languages are a plus.
