Senior Counsel, Group Benefits Litigation

Senior Counsel, Group Benefits Litigation The candidate will be part of the Law Department s Corporate P&C Group responsible for managing litigation brought against Group Benefits business including ERISA and non-ERISA matters arising from claims submitted under group insurance policies. The attorney will report to the Managing Assistant General Counsel for the Group Benefits business. Manage litigation arising out of Hartford s Group benefits business, including ERISA governed claims, Non-ERISA claims, and potential extra-contractual liabilities. Counsel line of business clients on a wide range of legal matters by providing practical legal advice. Develop and execute litigation strategy. Select and manage outside counsel and other litigation vendors. Partner with outside counsel in day-to-day case management and strategic decision-making. Manage costs associated with outside counsel and other litigation activities. Communicate and coordinate with line business management, and business lawyers to develop and execute strategy. Serve as liaison between outside counsel and in-house clients. Advise on other projects including regulatory inquires. Participate in the development and implementation of settlement and mediation strategy; attend mediations as required. A Juris doctorate (J.D.) required; CT Bar license preferred, or must qualify as authorized house counsel in compliance with Connecticut s rules. Regulatory experience strongly preferred. Should have 5 years of litigation practice experience. Significant experience with commercial litigation, Group Benefits and ERISA litigation experience strongly preferred. Must have superior analytical and critical thinking skills. Should have strong verbal and written communication skills. Collaborative, team-oriented work style, with effective interpersonal skills are needed.
