Department General Counsel - Corporate Secretary The candidate represents the highest level within the Legal Department under the General Counsel. Provides support and advice in setting Legal policies and procedures. Responsible for global Legal practice areas, managing individuals and associated expenses. Heads multiple legal teams at the global level. Leads a group of individuals, allocating Legal resources to support the needs of their respective practice and/or functional area. Provides strategic Legal advice to Executive Committee members and Regulators on high risk matters and global initiatives. Establishes Legal policy and procedures. Possesses an in-depth overall understanding of the products and services of the practice area and/or functional area for which he or she is responsible, as well as the ability to respond to Legal issues that can involve multiple products across practice areas regarding to global issues impacting Bank of New York Mellon company, products, services, and/or strategies. Adept at clearly communicating and interacting with individuals on different levels both internal and external to the Legal Department, including the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and local and international Regulators. Conducts sophisticated analyses of legal and business problems and develops sound legal strategies that balance firm interests with legal risks. Leads others in solving complex issues and identifying innovative solutions on a global scale. Has management oversight of the Global Legal practice areas and/or geographical region including financial and human resources management. Sets policies and procedures for assigned areas. Contributes to the strategic planning for the Global Legal Department in collaboration with the General Counsel and the Chief Operating Officer. Influences Company's strategy related to the businesses, products, services and/or strategies on a global scale. The candidate must have an advanced Legal Degree. License to practice in local jurisdiction usually required. In some jurisdictions, may not require license or certification for placement in the role. In others, licensure/certification is required. In some cases, role will require oversight of attorneys and legal work outside their country of licensure. 15+ years of total experience as a qualified attorney within the financial services industry, with 5-7 years of management experience is preferred.
