Director, Employment Counsel

Director, Employment Counsel The candidate will provide day-to-day legal expertise on a wide range of employment law matters and proactively manage compliance with employment statutes and regulations. Will report to the Associate General Counsel, Labor & Employment. Advise on a wide variety of employment matters, including hiring, background checks, contingent worker relationships, performance management, employee relations, leaves of absence and accommodations, discrimination and harassment laws, wage and hour, internal investigations, compensation/benefits and termination. Provide global employment law strategies and guidance to solve business challenges and create organizational alignment. Advise the company's HR team, managers, senior leadership and other stakeholders on the laws and regulations affecting employees and contractors in the US. Effectively represent company before Federal and state courts and administrative agencies involving alleged unlawful discrimination and harassment, reasonable accommodation, retaliation, minimum wage, overtime, and wage payment issues, violation of Federal, state and/or local law or regulation, wrongful discharge and other employment claims. Work with HR and management on crafting compliant policies and procedures. Strategically manage and resolve any employment and compliance-related litigation, claims, investigations, subpoenas, etc., working independently or with outside counsel. Prepare legal updates on emerging employment law issues. Provide guidance on immigration matters. Assist with legal aspects of employee training programs.

The candidate should have a J.D. degree and license to practice law in at least one state (California preferred). Must have 12+ years of strong employment law experience. Should have a combination of both in-house and law firm experience, with a proven track record as an effective manager, advisor and advocate. Significant experience managing and/or handling employment litigation is required. Strong experience providing counseling and advice to Human Resources and business partners is needed. Experience interacting at senior level with business management is essential.
