Director, Privacy Counsel The candidate will have responsibility for legal guidance on US privacy and data protection issues and strategic oversight of the company s global privacy program. Reporting to the Vice President, Lead Regulatory Counsel and Privacy Officer. Will deploy a deep knowledge of the company s business and collaborate with senior leaders to facilitate the business objectives of Company by providing practical, timely and effective legal counsel, while minimizing potential legal risks. Requires high-quality guidance and support to Company business functions on privacy and data protection, including ongoing support and enhancement of the company s privacy program, and training for business stakeholders. Essential job functions include: Oversight of the company s global privacy and data protection program, including the development and enhancement of policies, programs, and training; Oversight of privacy issues impacting US operations, including monitoring of legislative developments; Close collaboration with Data Governance and IT Security functions; Close collaboration with business partners to understand business needs and advance appropriate solutions; Review of contracts to assure compliance with privacy and data protection requirements; Assessment of Data Subject Requests under various laws and regulations; Identifying training needs among business stakeholders and developing / presenting training and education regarding privacy requirements and developments; Working in close cooperation with other in-house counsel to coordinate and streamline efforts for global efficiency; Taking primary responsibility for specific projects and/or client groups on matters of moderate to significant complexity; Developing a thorough understanding of and familiarity with Company business, its people, products, markets, facilities, customers and competitors and use this knowledge in providing guidance and counsel to Company business partners; Coordinating with and managing external counsel as required; Performing special assignments or projects if necessary, and other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Required Qualifications: Licensed and admitted to practice law in California, or licensed in another US state and eligible as Registered In-House Counsel with California State Bar; Significant demonstrated experience and expertise in US privacy and data protection requirements (HIPAA, CCPA, COPPA, etc.); Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to gain the trust of and form solid relationships with business partners in various functions as well as Legal Department colleagues; 7+ years of related experience in a top tier law firm and/or as in-house counsel; Decision-making ability and experience; Preferred Qualifications: Familiar with requirements for privacy and data protection outside the US, including GDPR and country-level requirements preferred; Familiarity with medical device or pharmaceutical industry preferred.
