Associate Counsel, Privacy Duties: Work closely with internal stakeholder (leadership, product, education teams) to develop approach to applicable state, federal, and international data privacy regulations relating to the collection, storage, transmission, and usage of user data in K-12 education and educational technology products. Monitor privacy trends in data protection and privacy laws, regulations and public policy. Work with product and education teams to assess and communicate the impact of new privacy regulations and laws. Provide advice to leadership and relevant internal teams to mitigate data privacy risks, incorporate privacy-by-design and privacy-by-default principles, and ensure alignment with applicable legal requirements and data protection policies and standards. Provide legal expertise and advice on a variety of matters, liaising with General Counsel as needed (external firm). Develop, review, and negotiate all contracts, including donor and partnership agreements, data privacy agreements and questionnaires, and data sharing agreements. Track and manage all contract document libraries and repositories. Respond to inbound privacy, security and data-related legal questions. Provide staff training and education resources on relevant privacy and security issues and practices. Manage key relationships and represent interests in the student data privacy community.

QUALIFICATIONS: JD degree and a U.S. state bar membership in good standing; an undergraduate degree in business, communications, or information technology is preferred. 3-5 years of combined, relevant experience in law firms, governmental agencies, and/or in-house legal departments and a strong background in privacy and data protection in a product-focused environment. Privacy program management (including monitoring and auditing) experience a plus. Must be highly comfortable in a fast-paced, ambiguous, informal work environment; experience in a start-up or small company environment is a plus. Must have: Strong subject matter expertise in privacy law, including GDPR, CCPA, and FERPA. Substantial experience conducting a legal analysis of and assessing legal responsibilities and risks relating to data protection and privacy, and identifying and advising on practical approaches to compliance and risk mitigation. Excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail. An ability to clearly and succinctly explain legal issues to a non-legal audiences. Experience driving, prioritizing, and effectively managing cross-functional initiatives, and an ability to both work independently and with multi-stakeholder teams. Exemplary personal and professional integrity, sound and practical business judgment, and strong ethical compass; exercises discretion and maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
