Director- Corporate Patent Counsel RESPONSIBILITIES: Prosecute a consistent flow of global patents relating to Gates core competencies in materials science, including highly-engineered products in power transmission and fluid power applications (25+ annually). Maintain an in-depth understanding of Gates operations, customers, competitors, and strategic objectives in order to advise on Gates intellectual property development and trademarks. Establish close partnerships with Gates innovation, engineering and product line management teams in order to ensure counsel is sought at every step of the process of product invention, development, manufacture and distribution. Regularly review and engage on statements of invention prepared by Gates engineers and scientists and submitted on internal eSOI asterisk site. Develop, implement and enforce an effective patent protection program for Gates; provide corporate-wide training on patent and trademark strategy. Draft legal opinions, such as freedom-to-operate and validity/invalidity opinions. Work closely with, provide support to and manage experienced patent and trademark paralegal. Manage trade secret protections by drafting NDAs, training employees, and conducting exit interviews. Effectively navigate foreign patent and litigation jurisdictions; specifically, China and Europe. Participate in the development of IP department strategic plans, policies and procedures. Actively monitor industry legal and business developments; advise regarding impact to Gates business of new developments in intellectual property and trademark law.

Qualifications: JD Degree or L.L.M. Degree and member (in good standing) of at least one state Bar, preferably Colorado. Registered Patent Attorney with the USPTO. Bachelor's degree in a science discipline; Master's is a plus. Significant experience in practical engineering in industrial manufacturing, mechanical/electrical and/or materials engineering. 8+ years of legal experience in strategic intellectual property development and protection, patent application and prosecution. Ability to quickly develop in-depth knowledge of Gates products, programs, operations, policies and strategies. Ability to understand and appropriately balance business opportunities and legal risks. Superior client counseling and communication skills that inspire a high degree of trust, invite consultation, and promote communication. Strong analytical skills and legal creativity, and significant experience in analyzing and providing practical, effective solutions to significant, complex transactions and issues. Ability to coordinate and lead work groups and project teams. Experience managing junior lawyers and non-legal professionals. Strong interpersonal skills, with proven ability to effectively communicate with C-Suite and executive leadership clients. Ability to prioritize work and to work in situations with multiple, simultaneous demands. Ability to maximize results using limited resources.
