Deputy General Counsel, Chief Intellectual Property

Deputy General Counsel, Chief Intellectual Property Responsibilities: Reports to HP General Counsel, and Chief Technology Officer, with worldwide responsibility for all IP matters across all business units. Responsible for global patent and trademark filing, prosecution and assertion, all IP transactional matters, IP monetization, M&A activities and IP strategy. Defines the IP Strategy, getting buy-in and funding from CEO, CFO and all BU leaders. Closely manage a large IP budget on a quarterly basis. Leads, manages and inspires a team of 70 IP professionals, responsible for a portfolio of 25K+ granted patents and 8K+ trademarks. Responsible for IP sales and licensing organization, optimising brand licensing, as well as technology and patent licensing. Personally involved in advising businesses on key IP issues, including acquisitions, critical IP litigation, and negotiating key IP agreements such as patent cross licenses, R&D partnerships etc.

Qualifications: 15+ years' relevant experience and an appropriate license or other right to provide legal advice. 5+ years' experience in management of large teams. Demonstrated ability to manage a budget aggressively and effectively. Track record of delivering exceptional results. Meaningful operational and program management experience. Experience with supporting revenue generating product development organizations spanning commercial and consumer markets, related support services and direct/channel go-to-market activities. Experience with identification of trends and drive global policies and efficiencies. Expertise with government officials and regulators to advocate for effective policies across a broad agenda, including intellectual property rights; market access; privacy, data protection, and security; social responsibility; sustainability and compliance; and taxation and economic incentives. Excellent lawyering skills; overall broad global legal knowledge of legal and regulatory issues; experience in complex and significant legal / regulatory matters; anticipate and provide proactive solutions to eliminate / mitigate risks and advance business. Mastery in negotiating or advising the most senior representatives of external and internal organizations on highly complex, high impact legal matters. Excellent leadership and people management skills, including performance management, problem solving, and evaluation. Ability to be visionary, innovative and inspire others. Winning attitude and have or develop a growth mindset and passion for continuous learning, development and improvement. Excellent interpersonal, communication and partnership skills; ability to work across multiple functions and effectively influence without authority .
