Senior Counsel - International Trade The candidate holds Law Department accountability for supporting on a variety of moderately complex to complex legal matters and executing projects including day-to-day advice to the company and its business professionals on a range of international trade compliance & regulatory matters. Responsibilities will include: effectively building and maintaining strong external and internal relations at a senior level; providing guidance and recommendation of international trade compliance strategy, policy, and practice to the general counsel and senior management; with the General Counsel, Associate General Counsel - Regulatory, Assistant General Counsel - International Trade and other members of the legal department, providing trusted business partnership and counselling on international trade decisions of importance to the Company and, as appropriate, contributing to the corporate strategy planning process; maintaining responsibility for designated practice areas as determined by the General Counsel; demonstrating an inclusive, consultative and thoughtful approach to achieving cross-functional alignment on issues internally; ensuring that legal services provided are cost-effective, practical, strategic, and consistent with the company's philosophies while creating an environment of collaboration with business partners and Law Department colleagues to help drive continual process and policy improvements; contributing to and ensuring delivery on Law Department business goals and the overall business plan of the company, ensuring that Law Department implements leading practices and operates at the highest ethical standards and developing emerging talents in the organization. Responsible for the company's compliance and advice on international trade, economic and trade sanctions, customs and border control regulations, including supply chain sustainability related restrictions, imposed under or in the context of Free Trade Agreements and the agreements of the World Trade Organization, World Customs Organization, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, OECD, World Fair Trade Organization, International Trade Center, including advising Company's International Trade, Illicit Trade Prevention, Finance (Know Your Customer/Vendor support), Operations, IP, and Tax functions. Liaises with Litigation on trade related cases. Partners with attorneys and internal clients to create proactive strategies designed to avoid or minimize exposure to legal liability. Helps business partners accurately understand the risks and consequences of the given situation or course of action. Effectively communicates the risks and the consequences and develops alternatives to manage identified risks. Identifies and analyzes legal issues, drafts and reviews key documents, presents clear recommendations and ensures legal compliance as it relates to the noted areas of law. Represents and oversees the company's position and filings before responsible government agencies and regulatory bodies in the jurisdictions which operates regarding the noted areas of law. Stays current with legal developments, best practices and benchmarks in the noted areas of law and assists internal clients in implementing policies and procedures in response thereto. Collaborates across the Law department and according to expectations set for the Center of Expertise. Maintains a culture with a high degree of emphasis on dignity, respect, and inclusion. Provide expert advice and legal counsel to clients throughout the organization on a variety of international trade regulatory law matters. Provide day to day legal advice and oversight to a variety of constituents including management, customers, and interaction with governmental officials on a range of regulatory matters related to international trade. Understand and be able to translate into plain language the legal ramifications of varied legal and regulatory risks. Support cross-functional teams with the development of policies, procedures, and programs to ensure that regulations and other regulatory best practices are reflected in the Company's business activities. Ability to contemplate the legal implications of new innovations and collaborate with the business to develop international trade related strategies for new products and technologies. Develop strong relationships throughout all functional areas, departments, and divisions to foster an advisory or collaborative approach to proactively meet regulatory requirements. Commercially oriented, understanding the nuances of complicated regulatory issues and able to think creatively to solve problems and mitigate risk while supporting business objectives. Elevates legal issues as needed. Maintains effective working relationships with outside counsel. Quickly grasps key drivers of the business and industry and quickly become immersed in the most important business issues facing the company. Demonstrates strategic, innovative, creative and inquisitive frame of mind, with strong business acumen and judgment. Should have Juris doctor and licensed to practice law in a locale where PMI operates. Must have 8 years of concentrated experience which demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and applied understanding of area of expertise; both in house and major law firm experience preferred. Solid working knowledge of international trade laws, regulations, and best practices is required. Should have demonstrated successful leadership and collaboration with colleagues and ability to develop business solutions with effective presentation of business risks and anticipated outcomes.
