Litigation Counsel Responsibilities: Manages and oversees litigation, pre-litigation, discovery, depositions, trials, mediations, arbitrations, court proceedings and settlement negotiations to successful outcomes. Collaborates and provides legal direction to internal stakeholders on all phases of litigation. Manages outside counsel to ensure effective representation of the company's legal interests. Ensures that litigated claims are handled and resolved in a cost-effective manner. Evaluates litigated, and pre-litigation claims and makes recommendations to the Chief Legal Officer, and senior business leaders regarding case strategy and resolution. Participates in case settlement conferences on behalf of the company according to approved settlement authority. Provides legal training to employees relevant to litigation and pre-litigation management. Researches and opine on matters requiring legal interpretation in support of business operations. May occasionally provide corporate secretarial support to subsidiary boards and internal governance committees. May provide mentorship to other legal team members. Supports other activities in the Law Department as requested by the Chief Legal Officer. Qualifications: Strong analytical, research, writing and oral advocacy skills. Experience working with high impact cases with high exposure. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a small team environment, including being flexible and adaptable. Ability to work independently and to approach matters with a hands-on attitude. History of working with a sense of urgency and a genuine desire to contribute to the company's collective success. General knowledge or deep desire to learn life insurance products, including the regulatory framework for life insurance and annuities. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to effectively counsel internal clients and manage relationships with external business partners. Ability to lead by example, acknowledge and assume responsibility for successes and failures in terms of actions, decisions, processes, and results.
