Associate General Counsel, Privacy

Associate General Counsel, Privacy Duties: Advise all levels of the Company in all areas of privacy, including counseling on legal issues and risks, negotiations with third parties, and policies and procedures, using concepts that the business can understand. Draft and negotiate data protection terms that appear in third-party service provider and customer agreements. Coordinate with Viasat's Security Engineering team to ensure operational, administrative, and technical data security measures are appropriately employed across the Company. Draft internal policy documents and develop and administer privacy-related training to employees to meet legal compliance obligations. Support the Viasat People & Culture team on privacy compliance matters applicable to Viasat's international workforce. Audit personal data processing within various lines of business to ensure alignment with approved privacy program requirements. Support the continued development of Viasat's international privacy program including contract templates, personal data recordkeeping, PIAs / DPIAs, and compliance with data protection laws in EMEA, LATAM, and APAC. Provide strategic and hands-on support for the adoption of privacy automation tools to help scale privacy compliance processes globally.

Qualifications: Juris Doctorate degree or equivalent with excellent academic credentials. Must have 3-5+ years prior legal experience, preferably in a privacy and compliance in-house practice with a global technology, ISP, or telecom business, or in a law firm serving such companies. An understanding of compliance frameworks (privacy, NIST, ISO, and PCI), consumer law, and telecommunications law. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written; must be able to ask clear, concise questions involving sophisticated technology to get requisite answers from business partners and Legal Department colleagues. Excellent administrative and interpersonal skills with attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy, together with the ability to run several simultaneous projects under deadline pressure. Ability to take initiative and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced corporate environment. When circumstances again allow, the ability and willingness to travel up to 10% of the time. Recognized privacy training and/or certification, including CIPP/US and/or CIPP/E. Experience with contract negotiations, data governance, PIAs/DPIAs, and privacy automation tools, e.g., DSAR processing, data discovery and mapping, etc.
