Assistant General Counsel The candidate will handle matters for both the Claims and Litigation Service Line as well as the Corporate Legal Services Service Line. Will handle a broad range of litigation and claims matters, including medical malpractice, employment, contract disputes, general liability, peer review matters, and government investigations. Negotiate and handle general as well as complex contracts relating to various types of business transactions including, physician employment, asset acquisitions, supply chain purchasing, leases and information technology. Managing outside counsel when retained and handling more complex matters as experience increases as well as providing legal advice to internal clients on legal, regulatory, legislative, accreditation and credentialing matters, corporate governance and transaction structure, contract terms and policy considerations impacting business planning, strategy and business transactions. Conducting internal investigations as requested; drafting, reviewing, and revising internal policies; providing legal training and risk management education to physicians and employees; and providing legal support to university, its subsidiaries, affiliates, and physicians insured through the UH Sponsored Physician Program. Meet with insurers, serve as staff to appropriate System boards and committees, attend Department and other university meetings and perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Deputy General Counsel and/or the Chief Legal Officer. Take and handle legal work as may be assigned from time to time by any other lawyer in the university Law Department while at the same time properly delegate work to other lawyers and support staff and supervise paralegals and support staff while engendering a team environment. Reporting directly to the Deputy General Counsel while integrally supporting and communicating with the Chief Legal Officer as necessary. Full understanding of all applicable ethical requirements and the Code of Professional Responsibility along with a firm commitment to providing legal services with the highest integrity. Close collaboration with all other lawyers in the Law Department, with Medical Staff and other clinical professionals, as well as with colleagues in various other Departments including Human Resources, Compliance, Risk Management, Internal Audit, Government Relations, Credentialing, Finance, Information Technology and Solutions, Strategic Business Planning, Resource Management, Supply Chain, Facilities and Construction, University Hospitals Medical Group and University Hospitals Medical Practices and the administration of each hospital. Responding to urgent inquiries on legal matters relating to patient care, including participation in the attorney on call rotation. Identifying opportunities for process improvement, implementing best practices and quality improvement. Individual goal setting while understanding and facilitating Claims and Litigation as well as Corporate Legal Services benchmarking efforts and Department goals. Commitment to customer service and a keen understanding of each clients needs and sense of urgency.

The candidate should have a Juris Doctor Degree. Must be licensed to or eligible to practice law in the State of Ohio, in good standing. Should have 5+ years of legal practice, including extensive litigation experience. Should preferably have 3+ years of working in healthcare industry, representing healthcare industry clients and/or working for state or federal government healthcare agencies handling corporate or regulatory matters. Experience with complex litigation preferred. Experience of reviewing, interpreting and advising on various aspect of the Affordable Care Act preferred. Must have a working knowledge of primary and secondary healthcare regulations that impact transactions with referral sources, govern tax exempt organizations and relate to reimbursement under state and federal healthcare payment programs. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products required. Working knowledge of legal database tools required.
