Managing Counsel Duties: Oversees the work of a team of attorneys and may include Paralegals or other legal staff, within a legal specialty in its entirety to ensure that all legal services are provided in one or more major areas. Serves as the chief counsel for one or more assigned areas. Leads, works directly on or provides subject matter expertise on significant, high-risk or complex legal matters. Provides the highest level of subject matter expertise for a legal specialty. Initiates cases or projects on behalf of clients. Has primary responsibility to the client. Regularly deals with senior management of the Department or the Company on legal matters within his or her area of legal expertise. Has input into or influence on Company decision-making. On behalf of the Company or the area of expertise, has significant interaction with persons outside of the Company. May receive matters directly from the Chief Legal Officer, but usually receives matters from a Deputy General Counsel, Divisional General Counsel or senior management of the Company. Keeps informed of new legislative and case law activity in area of expertise, and keeps Deputy General Counsel, Divisional General Counsel and appropriate management of Company informed. Usually manages a group of several attorneys (and possibly related paralegals and support staff) within a single area of law or supporting a limited number of specific business units within the Company. Implements strategy, leads teams of attorneys and/or outside counsel to plan and execute cases, projects or assignments. Makes decisions and furnishes opinions on matters of significant importance to the company and its affiliates. Develops objectives for implementation of Department or Company legal initiatives. Qualifications: J.D. Degree from an accredited law school. Currently licensed as an attorney in an appropriate U.S. jurisdiction. A seasoned attorney in an area of law. 10 years' relevant legal experience and some management experience has significant experience with or knowledge of an area of law, and who has direct official management responsibility over several other attorneys. Considered the subject matter expert within his or her area of legal expertise. Complex legal practices and procedures. Project management concept and techniques. Verbal and written communication skills for contacts with all levels of management and clients. Analytical ability to interpret statutes, regulations, insurance policies and other contracts. Decision-making ability to set work priorities and make recommendations. Ability to lead cross-functional projects. Ability to lead, initiate, organize and coordinate complex projects and/or cases. Significant negotiation skills. Leadership skills: team building concepts, motivating and influencing. Supervisory and management skills. Significant professional and/or civic involvement.
