Patent Attorney The candidate will provide patent preparation and prosecution services, as well as freedom-to-operate and patent landscape assessments, to accommodate the expanding patenting and intellectual property needs of the therapeutic proteins research and clinical groups, especially in the areas of oncology, ophthalmology, muscle & metabolism, and immunology/inflammation. Reports to Senior Director/Assistant Gen. Counsel Patents; Works closely with scientific staff and research directors to identify new patentable inventions relating to antibodies and other therapeutic proteins/large molecules; Follows the drug development process for individual molecules, from target proposal through clinical trials, and identifies patent-related issues and opportunities at various stages along the pipeline; Prepares and files new patent applications relating to antibody therapeutics and other therapeutic proteins; Prosecutes US and foreign patent applications and direct outside counsel in prosecution activities as appropriate; Conducts patent landscape overviews, freedom-to-operate analyses, validity assessments and patentability assessments, and communicates results and opinions in written and oral formats to general counsel/senior attorneys, research directors and senior management; Assists in opposition proceedings, patent office review proceedings and litigation preparation as needed; Provides support on due diligence projects, agreements and transactional work, administrative initiatives, and policy issues. The candidate should have advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in the life sciences (e.g., molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, immunology or related disciplines); Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school; Admitted to practice before the USPTO and licensed to practice in at least one state; 3 - 6 years of experience in a law firm setting (with or without corporate law department experience) preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the biological arts; Experience in conducting IP due diligence, freedom-to-operate, agreement review, and patent landscape assessments a plus. Ability to independently oversee legal matters, manage the use of outside legal counsel and work collaboratively with other personnel at company.
