New Jersey - SALT Tax Manager

Florham Park NJ SALT Tax Manager
The candidate will be responsible for helping clients assess their state and local tax burden by recommending solutions that support their overall business objectives and provide support so that their filling positions are consistent with good business practices and with the states' applicable tax laws and rules. Will assign best suited to address clients' needs, without regard to geographic barriers. Address state and local tax needs. Assist companies in identifying and assessing the strengths and weaknesses of their sales and use tax function, including accrual and compliance processes, managing sales and use tax audits, and evaluating sales and use tax exclusions and exemptions to determine the full extent of their application.

The candidate must have a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting. Certified Public Accountant, Enrolled Agent or Member of the Bar required. Master of Science in Taxation, Juris Doctor with Accounting or Tax, or Master of Law in Taxation preferred. 5+ years' experience needed. Experience identifying and addressing client needs: building, maintaining, and utilizing networks of client relationships and community involvement; communicating value propositions; managing resource requirements, project workflow, budgets, billing and collections; and preparing and/or coordinating complex written and verbal materials desired. Thorough knowledge of a variety of state and local tax sales and use tax laws, regulations, policies and procedures, as well as tax planning, restructuring, due diligence, audit defense, reverse audits and state controversy work essential. Must have considerable knowledge of sales and use tax implications on FAS 5, and software tools available to automate sales and use tax compliance decisions. Technical skills in a wide range of multistate sales and use tax matters, including FAS 5, reverse audits, tax planning, consulting, compliance, automation, mergers and acquisitions, controversy and audit defense preferred.

The candidate will identify complex tax issues and provide tax analysis for a variety of entities and their affiliates. Primary responsibilities include overseeing complex tax research projects for clients in diverse industries; research and analysis of a wide range of tax issues related to business transactions and tax implications of financing techniques for a variety of entities and their affiliates. May also undertake tax compliance assignments for current and former executives of client corporations and partners of client organizations. Assume tax planning responsibilities for federal and individual clients. Supervise assignments by the professional accountants serving as Consultants.

The candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or other business related field. CPA, Enrolled Agent or other appropriate certification (or in the process of pursuing) required. Advanced degree like MST, MAcc, J.D. or LL.M. preferred. Must have 2+ years of experience in providing tax planning services or preparing and reviewing client work papers and income tax returns. Should have knowledge of managing projects including scheduling, budgeting, client correspondence and billing, excellent technology, research and writing skills. Prior Big 4 experience a plus. The candidate will be responsible for the delivery of a full range of tax services for multiple clients in a wide variety of industries. Responsibilities include interacting closely with clients to provide innovative tax planning, consulting, and compliance expertise; providing primary and secondary review of complex tax returns; developing and managing staff; and working closely with partners and staff on client management, practice development, and business development activities. Will manage, direct, and monitor multiple client services teams on client engagements; plan, execute, direct, and complete tax projects in a wide variety of industries; provide innovative tax planning, consulting, and compliance expertise to clients; and manage to budget. Manage, develop, train, and mentor staff on tax projects and assess performance for engagement and year-end reviews. Conduct primary and secondary review of complicated or complex income tax returns including Corporate, S-Corp., partnership, and individual clients. Maintain active communication with clients to manage expectations, ensure satisfaction, make sure deadlines are met, and lead change efforts effectively. Consult, work with, and service client to make recommendations on business and process improvement and serve as a business advisor to client.

The candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting. CPA, Master's in Taxation, LL.M. in Taxation, or J.D. degree is also required. Must have 5-7 years of progressive federal tax consulting and/or compliance experience in public accounting or a combination of corporate and public accounting experience. Should have experience in Corporate, S-Corp. and/or Partnership returns. Must have excellent analytical, technical, and tax accounting/technology skills with proficiency in US GAAP, tax compliance, corporate consolidated returns, consolidated federal tax returns, partnership returns, and combined state tax returns. Should have computer expertise including knowledge of tax software and technology.
