Apple's new GC strikes it rich
Donald J. Rosenberg, Apple's new Senior Vice President and General Counsel, raked in the dough when he signed his contract. As part of his deal with Apple, the IBM veteran received 200,000 shares of restricted stock, which will be exercisable in four years, on December 1, 2010. The shares are worth more than $18.25 million.

New University of California GC
Charles F. Robinson has been appointed General Counsel of the Regents and Vice President for Legal Affairs by the University of California. He will assume office on January 1. For the past six years, Robinson has been serving the California Independent System Operator Corporation as Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary. Robinson, who is replacing former University of California General Counsel James Holst, will report jointly to the president and to the board of regents. He will supervise a staff of 40 attorneys and 45 paralegal, administrative, and support staff members, in addition to 17 attorneys working on six of the 10 University of California campuses. Robinson will work from the University of California's Oakland headquarters.

Erie Indemnity GC to retire
One of the largest insurance companies in the United States, Erie Indemnity Company, has stated that its Senior Executive Vice President, Secretary, and General Counsel, Jan Van Gorder, is set to retire on December 31, 2006. However, Gorder will continue to serve as acting Secretary and General Counsel until a permanent replacement is selected. Having joined Erie Insurance in 1981, Gorder has steered the company through a host of legal issues. Providing management services to Erie Insurance Group member companies, Erie Indemnity holds a place in Forbes' “Platinum 400” list of the best-managed companies in America.

Tachiki joins the Metropolitan Water District as GC
Karen L. Tachiki will rejoin the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California as General Counsel on February 5. Tachiki, who succeeds Jeff Kightlinger, previously served as Assistant General Counsel for the agency for several years. As the lead attorney on Colorado River matters, Tachiki will head the agency's in-house and consulting attorneys, direct its legal strategies with regard to litigation matters, and protect the district's interests in the signing of contracts and other legal matters. An expert in water matters with more than 25 years of experience, Tachiki says she is looking forward to working with the new partners at the agency on issues involving the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta and the Colorado River.

U.S. Steel appoints Garraux as GC
James Garraux has been elevated by U.S. Steel Corporation to General Counsel and Senior Vice President for Labor Relations. At present, he is serving the corporation as Vice President for Labor Relations and will assume his new responsibilities as General Counsel on February 1. He will also join the corporation's executive committee and will take on responsibility for the environmental affairs department. The corporation hopes to gain leverage from Garraux's wide range of experience with labor and employment matters.

John Longwell joins infoUSA as GC
John Longwell has joined leading provider of proprietary business and consumer databases infoUSA as General Counsel. The company provides sales leads and mailing lists, database marketing services, data processing services, and sales and marketing solutions to its millions of clients. Prior to this appointment, Longwell served the United States Supreme Court as law clerk to Stephen G. Breyer. Longwell practices complex commercial litigation and regulatory law. He will be based in both Omaha and Washington, DC, due to the company's increased presence on the Eastern seaboard after acquiring Opinion Research Corporation.
