FTC Announces New GC
With the vacancy created for the position of acting general counsel at the Federal Trade Commission by William Blumenthal leaving to return to private law practice, the agency has announced that David C. Shonka will take Blumenthal's place. Shonka has worked in the Office of General Counsel for the FTC for three decades and the FTC is optimistically looking forward to Shonka's plans for the future.

Former Fannie Mae GC Leaves for Paul Weiss
Several people have been watching Beth Wilkinson, former general counsel for Fannie Mae, to see where she will end up. The waiting period is over. Wilkinson has officially been voted into partnership with Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. Wilkinson has enormous experience and an impressive resume; she had several options open to her after leaving Fannie Mae. She is excited for the future and for the importance of the typical cases of Paul Weiss, but is impressed that they don't ''take themselves too seriously.'' She is looking forward to a bit of a more-relaxed environment and is eager to get to work.

Tyco Restructures Duties in Legal Department
Trevor Faure, general counsel for Tyco's Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) and Enrique Aznar, Tyco's EMEA deputy GC and chief compliance counsel have announced they will be leaving Tyco at the end of this month. Faure leaves for a global GC role with another company; Aznar leave for a global compliance counsel role with Nokia Siemens Networks. This has cause Tyco to rearrange some responsibilities. Faure's position will be done away with and most of his duties will be taken over by David Symonds, chief lawyer for Tyco's Flow Control business. Aznar's position will be filled by Joost Wiebega, Tyco's Northern Europe senior regional counsel.
