US Airways appoints Minerva VP, Legal
U.S. Airways' board of directors has promoted Associate General Counsel and Managing Director, Legal, Michael J. Minerva to the position of Vice President, Legal. Minerva has 12 years of experience in the aviation industry. He will focus on legal aspects of the airline's labor, compliance, and litigation transactions, as well as other related matters. Prior to joining the airline, Minerva was a solo legal practitioner. Scott Kirby has also been promoted within the company; he has assumed office as President. Formerly, he served as Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing. As President, Kirby will retain his present duties, which include pricing, scheduling and planning, marketing, forming alliances, overseeing distribution, managing reservations, and implementing information technologies; he will also take on new tasks, including airport customer service, finance management, and labor relations.

Upcoming West Coast General Counsel Conference
Corporate Counsel magazine is organizing the fourth annual West Coast General Counsel Conference, to be held in California this November. Topics to be discussed at the gathering of peers include augmenting cost-effective strategies for litigation, trial tactics and ADR, the role of the general counsel as a business advisor to the corporation, and leadership qualities, among others.

Jeffrey W. Epstein is new Motient Corporation GC
Motient Corporation appointed Jeffrey W. Epstein General Counsel and Secretary, entrusting him with responsibility for supervising the company's legal affairs. Epstein previously dealt with transactions as Director and Assistant General Counsel for Capital One Financial Corporation. Along with Epstein, two more people were recruited to top posts within the company; Robert H. Brumley was appointed President and CEO, and Neil L. Hazard was appointed Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Treasurer. Brumley has extensive domestic and international telecommunications, security, and transactions experience, while Hazard has over 30 years of experience in finance and operations in the telecommunications industry. Motient Corporation, the controlling shareholder of TerreStar Networks, Inc., is a development-phase satellite communications company.

Canfield joins DHB as GC and Corporate Secretary
Thomas Canfield joined DHB Industries, Inc,. a protective body armor maker, as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. John Siemer also joined the company, as Chief Operating Officer and Chief of Staff, and Sam White assumed the role of Head of Global Sales. DHB has high hopes for Canfield, who has more than 25 years of experience in both U.S. and international business working with high-profile corporations in legal, regulatory, business development, corporate finance, and operations matters. Canfield formerly served as CEO and Plan Administrator for AT&T Latin America Corporation. Canfield will supervise the company's legal and government affairs (including regulatory, corporate, and compliance activities), as well as its operational and financial teams in contract arrangements, patents, and employee relations. Additionally, he will assist the executive team and board of directors with strategic planning and transactions, corporate affairs, and corporate governance. DHB Industries designs, manufactures, and distributes bullet-resistant and protective body armor for members of the military and law enforcement in the U.S. and abroad.

Dot VN appoints new GC
Dot VN, Inc., has appointed Louis P. Huynh as its General Counsel. Huynh will handle legal matters for the company, such as developing business practices, policies, and procedures. Additionally, Huynh will assist the company in completing and filing a registration statement. Formerly, as an attorney with The Otto Law Group, Huynh focused on corporate finance, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate litigation matters. Huynh also has prior experience working in a corporation, Viet Wah Trading, Inc., where he served as Legal Counsel. Dot VN, Inc., is the exclusive online service provider for .vn (Vietnam) domain name registrations and has offices across the globe.

HealthSouth formally appoints Executive VP, GC, and CS
Birmingham-based HealthSouth Corporation has formally named John Whittington Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary; Whittington has been serving in the position on an interim basis since July. The company finalized his appointment to the post based on his vast experience in the legal field. Prior to joining the company, Whittington was a partner in Bradley, Arant, Rose & White, LLP. With 35 years of experience in the legal profession, Whittington is an expert on corporate law and has been involved in several complex business reorganization cases. HealthSouth is one of the nation's largest providers of outpatient surgery, diagnostic imaging, and rehabilitative healthcare services.

CPS Energy hires GC
CPS Energy has appointed Carolyn Shellman General Counsel. As part of the local gas and electric utility management team, Shellman will report to the company's general manager and CEO. Prior to joining CPS, Shellman was Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary of Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), where she was responsible for corporate legal, governmental affairs, and external communications matters. Additionally, she handled ERCOT's 16-employee legal department. CPS Energy is the nation's largest municipally owned energy company providing both natural gas and electricity. Owned by the City of San Antonio, the company serves more than 600,000 electricity customers and more than 300,000 natural gas customers.
