Energy specialist joins Linn Energy
Fortune 500 energy company Linn Energy, LLC, has named Charlene A. Ripley as its senior vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary. The oil and gas attorney, who comes from Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, has nine years of experience as general counsel as well as 19 years of experience in the energy field. According to Michael C. Linn, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of the company, Ripley's knowledge relating to corporate governance and regulatory matters will help the company with its property acquisitions across the county. The NASDAQ lists Linn Energy as an independent oil and gas company concentrating on the development and acquisition of long-lived properties.

Kanawha County lawmaker joins West Virginia Department of Commerce
Senior Kanawha County lawmaker and member of the House of Delegates Jon Amores has joined the West Virginia Department of Commerce as deputy secretary and general counsel. Having significant knowledge of state government and a strong financial background, Amores will now pocket $75,000 per year in the position. He spent three years as Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and was not reelected to the post this year. Amores also formerly worked for JPMorgan Chase in Charleston. The West Virginia State Bar has stated that Amores's law license is "inactive." The Department of Commerce clarified that he will not be on court duty for the department but will only oversee legal matters.

Leading CRO appoints new VP and GC
Averion International Corporation has named Glenn E. Deegan as its new vice president and general counsel. The clinical research organization (CRO) hopes to gain leverage from Deegan's experience with legal, healthcare, and public-company matters. Deegan will now manage and direct all legal matters for the company. He will also work on securities regulations, acquisitions, and corporate-governance issues. He brings to the company 15 years of experience handling complex legal and business matters, including matters related to corporate finance and transactions, employment, and intellectual property. Deegan comes from MacroChem Corporation, a biopharmaceutical company, where he was vice president and general counsel. Averion International focuses on oncology, dermatology, medical devices, and nephrology.

CalSTRS appoints legal head
The California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS) has named Kathleen Andleman as its new general counsel. Andleman will serve as chief legal advisor to the Teachers' Retirement Board. She will work on the system's operational and executive management and provide guidance to the fund's legal services team. She will also oversee work pertaining to auditing, compliance, contracts, information security, and community-property matters. The former Chief Counsel of the California Victim Compensation and Government Claims Board, Andleman also served as an attorney for the California Franchise Tax Board for more than 12 years. The second-largest public pension fund in the United States, CalSTRS provides retirement, disability, and survivor benefits to about 800,000 public school educators and their families in California.

Starling is new GC at North Carolina Department of Agriculture
Raymond A. Starling has joined the North Carolina Department of Agriculture as general counsel. Starling, an associate in Hunton & Williams, LLP's Raleigh office, will support the department in all its legal matters, which include legislation, rulemaking and policy development, the formation of boards and commissions, and departmental operations. Starling mainly concentrated on commercial litigation while at Hunton & Williams. He also specializes in legal issues facing the agricultural and agribusiness sectors. William S. Patterson, managing partner of the Raleigh office of Hunton & Williams, stated that the firm is happy for Starling despite its loss. He said that Starling, who has a B.S. in Agricultural Education, will "meld his passions with his education" in his new role.

Trident Microsystems appoints new GC and VP
David L. Teichmann has joined Trident Microsystems, Inc., as its general counsel, vice president of human resources, and corporate secretary. He has more than two decades of experience providing counsel and leadership to international companies in Silicon Valley. Trident Microsystems is a leading provider of digital-television technology for the consumer digital-video marketplace. The firm hopes to fortify its corporate governance and organizational foundation with his superior management skills. A public-company general counsel, Teichmann has had vast experience as an international technology and transactions lawyer. He earlier served GoRemote Internet Communications, Inc., now known as iPass, Inc., as senior vice president, general counsel, and secretary.
