Employment Counsel

Irvine CA Employment Counsel The candidate will provide valued legal counsel across the Reyes family of businesses with respect to any number of federal, state and local employment law topics. Position Responsibilities may include: Providing knowledgeable and practical legal advice to human resources professionals regarding day-to-day legal concerns and consequences, including discipline, counseling and discharge, non-discrimination, non-harassment, wage and hour practices, and government contractor compliance requirements; Responding to attorney letters and administrative charges involving employment-related concerns; Providing guidance to human resources professionals on ADA interactive process discussions and FMLA compliance; Drafting and negotiating Separation Agreements and OWBPA disclosures; Responding to employment-related subpoenas; Managing outside counsel in handling employment litigation and reducing the costs associated with outside counsel, as needed; Maintaining working knowledge of company policies and federal, state and local legislation; Advising human resources departments and operating business managers on pending changes in employment laws.

The candidate should have Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from a respected law school, with a strong academic record. Must have 5+ years of experience as an employment attorney, which ideally combines law firm training with in-house counsel experience on a wide range of employment matters and employment litigation. Admission to a U.S. state Bar with an active license, and compliance with requirements for in-house practice in the State of Illinois is needed. Should have excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.

Assists the VP and General Counsel in evaluating effectiveness of current corporate policies and researches, designs, and implements new policies and processes as required. Assists the VP and General Counsel and cross-functional team in reviewing, developing, evaluating, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive knowledge management program, including document management and retention and e-discovery. Supports the VP and General Counsel and Business on Mergers and Acquisition Transactions. Works with business and functional leaders as required to assess and advise on legal matters. Researches legal and business issues as required. Manages outside legal counsel as required ensuring competency of work and meeting deadlines.

The candidate must have Bachelor's and Juris Doctor degree and is a member in good standing with the California Bar. Should have 5-8 years of experience as an employment law and litigation attorney in a mid-size or large law firm or in-house legal department. Consumer products industry experience required, with wine industry experience is preferred. Excellent written communication skills for advising the General Counsel and other senior leadership, creating reports/presentations, and extensive business and legal correspondence is required. Thorough understanding of state and federal civil procedure, and of California and Federal employment laws and regulations is needed. Experience dealing cross-functionally with multiple business groups is essential.
