Exercises significant independent judgment within broadly defined policies and practices to determine best method for accomplishing work and achieving objectives. Acts as an expert providing direction and guidance to process improvements and establishing policies. Frequently represents the organization to external customers/clients as well as government agencies and other authoritative bodies. Drives the development of legal strategies by providing specialized legal expertise in the area of labor and employment law. Shares growing expertise within the Global Functions Employment Law Group and with clients through both informal and formal training and mentoring. Identifies and resolves complex legal issues requiring in-depth knowledge and judgment within the area of labor and employment law. Scope includes counseling business unit clients at a local or regional level and resolving sub-region, region and/or business unit level labor and employment issues. Impact includes addressing issues facing multiple client organizations. Advanced university degree in law (e.g. JD or LLB) is needed. Applicable Bar Admission (in good standing) is essential. Should have 6-10 years labor and employment legal experience at a law firm or in-house. Advanced level of experience in labor and employment law acquired through being a leading resource in-house or in similar industry or law firm environment is needed. Advanced breadth and depth of practical and academic knowledge within the labor employment area is essential. Strong knowledge of company policies and procedures, particularly Human Resources policies. Awareness of the international legal environment for the labor and employment area. Advanced skills and experience in negotiating or advising on complex or high value/risk matters in the labor and employment area is needed. Labor and employment litigation experience, either at a law firm or in-house is essential. Proactive and effective communicator of valuable information to clients and colleagues is needed.

Senior Corporate Counsel, Employment Law The candidate will report to the Assistant General Counsel and manage a diverse array of labor and employment matters. Will leverage prior law firm and in-house experience to effectively partner with Human Resources to create internal best practices on managing employee relations matters, oversee the work of outside counsel on employment-related litigation, and advise on external agency cases as well as internal employee relations investigations. Develop a deep understanding of company's business and products and the applicable industry developments and requirements. Draft, review in conjunction with the Human Resources team employment related agreements, and work on a wide variety of Human Resources projects. Provide advice to the HR team on employment matters, including, e.g., wage and hour compliance, disability accommodations, involuntary terminations, reductions in force, leaves of absence, employment law training for managers, sensitive misconduct investigations, and general risk assessments. Work collaboratively with a broad range of people and departments throughout the organization to develop and maintain strong working relationships between Legal, HR, Finance, IT, Security, Internal Audit, and operational groups, utilizing a team based approach. Engage with outside counsel to effectively resolve threatened or outstanding employment litigation matters and to establish best practices for prevention of matters. Establish a rapport and working relationship with business partners in order to encourage and continue the proactive use of in-house legal counsel. Understand and be able to translate into plain English the legal ramifications of varied legal issues (including regulatory requirements) and clearly and succinctly articulate the risks. Should have membership in good standing in the California State Bar. Must have solid experience in applicable firm and in-house legal environments, with 2+ years at a law firm. Significant substantive expertise in US employment law is needed. International employment law experience a plus. Ability to review, understand, analyze, and interpret employment agreements is essential. Contract drafting and negotiating experience required.

Manage all aspects of litigation and discovery, including e-discovery, and coordination with company witnesses and record custodians. Lead and collaborate with cross-functional partners on complex projects to sustain and enhance employment law compliance across multiple jurisdictions. Work closely with outside counsel to manage risk and ensure that internal partners receive effective, business-focused employment law support. Support the company s commitment to a discrimination and harassment free workplace by assisting on employment compliance projects as needed and providing training to managers and employees.

The candidate must have 6-12 years of employment and labor law experience at a highly respected law firm and/or in-house corporate environment. J.D. Degree required. Admission to the California Bar preferred. Must be experienced in employment and labor disputes. Client counseling experience required, and employment litigation experience preferred.

Advise on a broad range of employment law matters, including recruiting, hiring, training, employee relations, performance management, compensation, leave of absence and accomodations, wage and hour, benefits, and terminations. Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of employment documents, including employment contracts, restrictive covenant agreements, assignment letters, separation agreements, and internal policies and handbooks. Review and respond to claims, demand letters, audits, and other employment-related inquiries or litigation matters.

A J.D. and Bar passage required. Should have 6+ years of relevant experience at a law firm or in-house at a technology company. Combination of product counseling and employment counseling experience is a plus. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, including public-speaking abilities.
