Nick Jonas Details Daughter Malti’s Premature Birth Crisis

By Ma Fatima | Dated: 02-04-2026

Nick Jonas is sharing new details about one of the most emotional and frightening chapters of his life: the premature birth of his daughter, Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. The singer and actor recently reflected on the experience, describing the intensity of the moment, the uncertainty that followed, and the extraordinary medical care that ultimately saved his daughter’s life.

Jonas and his wife, actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas, welcomed Malti via surrogate in January 2022. While the couple had been preparing for a later due date, they were suddenly informed that their baby would arrive far earlier than expected. The unexpected call set off a whirlwind of fear and urgency, as they rushed to the hospital knowing the risks associated with extreme prematurity.

Malti was born weighing just 1 pound, 11 ounces, a size Jonas has described as shocking and terrifying. He recalled that when she was delivered, her condition was immediately critical. Medical staff had to resuscitate her moments after birth, a scene Jonas has said remains etched in his memory. Neonatal specialists quickly intervenated, stabilizing her and transferring her to the neonatal intensive care unit, where she would spend the next several months fighting to grow stronger.

Doctors explained that Malti’s underdeveloped organs and fragile immune system meant she would require round-the-clock monitoring and advanced medical support. Over the course of her NICU stay, she underwent six blood transfusions, a necessary step to help her body cope with the complications that often accompany premature birth. Jonas has emphasized that each procedure, while lifesaving, was emotionally overwhelming for him and his wife.

The experience was made even more challenging by pandemic-era hospital protocols. At the time, strict COVID-19 restrictions limited how many people could be present in the NICU, forcing Jonas and Chopra Jonas to take turns visiting their daughter. The couple often worked in long, exhausting shifts, ensuring one of them was always by Malti’s side. Jonas has said that leaving the hospital each day, even briefly, felt unbearable, as every moment away came with lingering fear and uncertainty.

Despite the intense stress, Jonas has repeatedly praised the NICU staff for their compassion and expertise. He described the nurses and doctors as constant sources of reassurance, guiding them through each medical update and milestone. Seeing other families in similar situations also left a deep impression on him, underscoring how common yet rarely discussed premature birth complications can be.

After more than three months in the hospital, Malti was finally strong enough to go home. Jonas has said that the day they brought her back marked an emotional turning point, replacing months of anxiety with relief and gratitude. While the early days were defined by uncertainty, her progress has been a testament to both modern neonatal medicine and her own resilience.

Now a toddler, Malti is thriving, and Jonas says her difficult start in life has reshaped his perspective on parenthood. Everyday moments family time, play, and laughter carry deeper meaning because of what the family endured. He has spoken openly about how the experience strengthened his bond with Chopra Jonas and reinforced the importance of gratitude and presence.

Although the couple keeps Malti largely out of the public eye, they have chosen to share parts of her story to raise awareness about premature birth and NICU journeys. Chopra Jonas has previously spoken about the emotional toll of watching her daughter fight for survival and the long road to recovery that followed. Together, they hope that openness can provide comfort to other parents facing similar challenges.

For Jonas, revisiting those early memories is never easy, but he believes sharing the truth matters. Malti’s story, he says, is one of resilience, expert medical care, and unwavering parental love. While the beginning was marked by fear and uncertainty, it ultimately became a powerful reminder of how fragile life can be and how extraordinary its recovery can be.

As Jonas reflects on that intense period, he remains deeply grateful for the doctors, nurses, and medical teams who played a role in saving his daughter’s life. What once felt like an impossible ordeal has become a defining chapter in his journey as a father, one that continues to shape how he views family, health, and the value of every moment.
