Emma Heming Willis has revealed how she first met husband Bruce Willis before their romance began. She shared that they met while she was engaged to someone else.
During a recent appearance on Hoda Kotb’s
Making Space podcast, Emma recalled meeting Bruce in 2005 at a gym in Los Angeles. At the time, she was engaged to another man. Even so, Bruce’s kindness and friendly personality immediately caught her attention.
Bruce Willis Made an Early Impression
Emma said she and Bruce often saw each other at the gym. They talked during their visits and gradually became acquainted. She admired his warmth, humor, and genuine interest in other people. His celebrity status was never what impressed her most.
Emma also remembered telling her mother about meeting Bruce. She described him as an incredibly nice person. Her mother quickly reminded her that she was already engaged. Emma now laughs about that conversation.
She made it clear that their relationship remained completely platonic. They did not begin dating until after her engagement ended.
Their Relationship Grew Over Time
After Emma’s engagement ended, she and Bruce reconnected. Their friendship soon developed into a romance. The couple married in 2009.
Emma and Bruce have two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn. Bruce also shares daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah with his former wife, Demi Moore. The blended family has remained close and continues to support one another publicly.
Bruce Changed Emma’s Outlook on Life
Emma said Bruce transformed the way she approaches life. She described herself as organized and focused on planning ahead. Bruce encouraged her to enjoy the present and embrace spontaneity.
She said those lessons continue to shape her daily life. She remains grateful for the perspective Bruce brought into their relationship.
Advocating for Dementia Awareness
The interview also addressed Bruce’s health journey. In 2022, his family announced his aphasia diagnosis, and he retired from acting. In 2023, they revealed that he had frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
Since then, Emma has dedicated much of her time to supporting caregivers and raising awareness about dementia. She regularly shares resources, offers encouragement, and speaks openly about the challenges families face.
A Love Story That Began Unexpectedly
Emma’s reflections highlight how a chance meeting eventually became a lasting marriage. Although she was engaged when she first met Bruce, their romance did not begin until after that relationship ended.
