General Counsel Pay Beyond Salary
General Counsel pay often includes more than a base salary.
For example, Fortune 500 base salaries ranged from about $300,000 to $1.2 million, according to BCG.
In addition, many legal chiefs receive annual bonuses. Some also receive stock and other long-term awards.
As a result, total pay can rise well above base salary.
Furthermore, stock awards can change yearly pay. Their value can rise or fall with the company’s stock price.
Larger Companies Pay More
Company size can also affect General Counsel pay.
According to BCG, General Counsel at smaller companies earned about $1.2 million in total pay.
By comparison, the average reached about $2.8 million at mid-size companies.
Meanwhile, Fortune 500 General Counsel earned about $3.6 million on average.
As companies grow, their legal chiefs often handle more work. This work can include lawsuits, deals, and compliance.
In addition, General Counsel may advise company leaders and boards.
Tech Leads GC Pay
Industry can also affect General Counsel pay.
According to BCG, technology General Counsel earned about $8.9 million in total pay on average.
Meanwhile, entertainment and media followed at about $8.5 million.
By comparison, transportation General Counsel earned about $6 million. Financial services followed at about $4.8 million.
However, several other industries had lower averages. These included healthcare, manufacturing, energy, and retail.
At the same time, stock awards may help explain some of these gaps. Technology companies often use stock to reward senior executives.
Stock Awards Boost Pay
Public company filings show how high General Counsel pay can reach.
For example, Alphabet’s Kent Walker received about $30.16 million in total pay in 2024.
Most of that amount came from stock awards.
Similarly, Apple General Counsel Kate Adams received about $27.18 million that year.
More than $22 million of her package came from stock awards.
Meanwhile, Amazon’s David Zapolsky received about $25.7 million in 2024.
Stock awards made up most of his total pay.
Therefore, salary alone does not show the full value of these packages.
What Pay Data Means
The data shows another career path for lawyers seeking senior roles.
Traditionally, many lawyers have focused on BigLaw partnership. However, senior in-house lawyers can also earn substantial pay.
Furthermore, General Counsel roles can bring broader business duties. Lawyers may work with CEOs, boards, and senior executives.
In addition, some roles include stock and other long-term rewards.
For lawyers considering an in-house move, salary should not be the only factor.
Instead, they can also consider career growth and leadership duties.
Business experience may also matter. Likewise, equity can affect the long-term value of an offer.
Overall, the data shows strong earning potential for General Counsel. At large companies, stock awards can make a major difference in total pay.
