White and Case is growing its antitrust practice.
The firm has hired former U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division chief Gail Slater.
Slater will join as a partner in Washington, D.C. She will work with the firm’s antitrust and technology teams.
Her move adds senior government experience to the firm.
Gail Slater Brings DOJ Experience
Slater led the DOJ Antitrust Division for less than one year. She left the role in February 2026.
During her time there, the division handled cases across many industries.
For example, the DOJ opened investigations into egg producers and meatpacking companies.
Meanwhile, the agency continued cases involving major technology companies. These included Google and Apple.
Slater also worked on Constellation Energy’s $16.4 billion deal for Calpine Corporation.
The DOJ required Constellation to sell three power plants. The sale was part of the deal review.
Slater’s Legal Career
Slater has worked on antitrust matters for many years.
Before joining the DOJ, she spent about 10 years at the Federal Trade Commission.
She worked on several merger cases at the FTC. One involved Whole Foods’ planned purchase of Wild Oats.
Slater also held senior jobs at Fox Corp and Roku.
In addition, she served as an economic adviser to JD Vance when he was a U.S. senator.
She later worked with the White House National Economic Council during Trump’s first term.
Slater’s DOJ Record
Slater’s time at the DOJ included a dispute over a merger case.
In July 2025, two of her deputies were dismissed. The dispute involved Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s planned $14 billion purchase of Juniper Networks.
Slater had opposed efforts to settle the case.
The dispute raised questions about merger policy and antitrust enforcement.
However, Slater remained in charge of the Antitrust Division until February 2026.
White and Case Expands Team
Slater will advise clients through White and Case’s global antitrust practice.
Her work also covers technology and competition law.
As a result, she can advise clients facing government reviews and antitrust cases.
Former government lawyers also bring knowledge of agency rules and practices.
That experience can help firms guide clients through complex cases.
Slater Returns to Private Practice
After leaving the DOJ, Slater joined American Compass in March 2026.
She served as chair of competition and technology policy there.
Now, she is returning to private practice with White and Case.
Her new role will focus on antitrust and competition matters.
For White and Case, the hire adds another senior lawyer to its global antitrust team.
It also adds experience in technology and competition law.
