Kirkland and Ellis Leads the Rankings
Kirkland and Ellis topped the report’s list for 2024 profits per equity partner. The firm reported about $9.253 million per equity partner. The report estimates that six or more partners earn at least $25 million a year.
Wachtell Lipton ranked second, with about $9.036 million in profits per equity partner. Quinn Emanuel came third, at about $8.643 million.
Davis Polk and Paul Weiss also made the list. However, these figures show average firm profits per equity partner. They do not show each partner’s personal pay.
The report’s estimates of $25 million earners should also be viewed with care. They are not confirmed pay figures for every lawyer listed.
Private Equity and M&A Boost Partner Pay
The report points to private equity, mergers and acquisitions, and major lawsuits as key sources of high pay.
Partners can earn more when they bring in large clients. For example, they may work with major companies or investment funds. These clients can return with more work over time.
Strong client ties also help partners win new business. As a result, firms may pay more to lawyers who bring in steady work and keep clients.
Law Firm Pay Plans Make a Difference
Law firms use different ways to set partner pay. Some reward lawyers for the work and clients they bring in. Others focus on seniority, teamwork, or firm profits.
Under an eat-what-you-kill plan, partners earn based on the business they bring to the firm. By contrast, lockstep plans link pay to seniority or years in the partnership.
Some firms use a mix of both systems. Therefore, two partners at the same firm may earn very different amounts.
What This Means for Legal Careers
High partner pay also shapes hiring across the legal market. Top firms may offer large deals to attract lawyers with strong client ties and a record of winning business.
For younger lawyers, the report offers a key lesson. Legal skills matter, but they are only part of career growth. Building client trust, learning about business, and finding new work can also help lawyers advance.
Still, pay of $25 million or more remains rare in the legal field.
