By Ma Fatima | Dated: 10-29-2026

BCG Attorney Search has released its Remote Work in Law Firms 2025–2026 report. The report looks at remote work across the legal industry. It ranks law firms and offers tips for lawyers who want flexible schedules.

Remote work remains a major issue for law firms. Many firms want lawyers back in the office. However, many attorneys want more freedom. As a result, remote work can affect hiring and staff retention.

Report Reveals Gaps in Remote Work Policies

The report shows clear gaps in law firm policies. It states that 68% of major firms require four office days each week. Meanwhile, 12% require five days. Only 8% offer fully remote work.

The report also points to unclear rules. It says 73% of firms give vague or misleading details about remote work. In addition, 89% of surveyed associates say informal rules go beyond written policies.

These findings matter to job seekers. A firm’s public policy may not reflect daily office life. Therefore, attorneys should ask clear questions before accepting a job.

Quinn Emanuel Tops Remote Work Rankings

Quinn Emanuel Urquhart and Sullivan ranks first for remote work flexibility. It scores 94 points. Husch Blackwell ranks second with 87 points. Fisher Phillips follows in third place with 85 points.

The report also names Gunderson Dettmer, Fenwick and West, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich and Rosati, and Cooley as firms with flexible work options.

However, some firms have stricter office rules. These include Sullivan and Cromwell, Cravath, Swaine and Moore, Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen and Katz, Simpson Thacher and Bartlett, and Cleary Gottlieb Steen and Hamilton.

Attorneys should check each firm’s current policy. Rules may differ by office, role, and practice area.

Remote Work Negotiation Tips

The report urges attorneys to discuss remote work during interviews. Candidates should ask how many days they must attend the office. They should also ask if rules vary by team.

Additionally, candidates should check for exceptions and location limits. They should get any agreed terms in writing before accepting an offer.

Attorneys can also explain the value of flexible work. For example, remote schedules may help them meet deadlines and serve clients. This approach can help firms see the benefits.

Remote Work Shapes Law Firm Hiring

Remote work can affect hiring and staff retention. Therefore, clear policies may help firms attract legal talent.

The report expects hybrid work to remain common. However, many firms may still require regular office attendance. Technology may also change how firms track work and results.

For attorneys, flexibility is now part of career planning. Job seekers should compare remote work options, pay, and growth prospects. Meanwhile, firms can build trust with clear rules and open communication.
