Asst General Attorney / General Attorney - Environmental The candidate will provide legal advice to internal clients including, but not limited to, Environmental Remediation, Environmental Operations, Corporate Real Estate, and various railroad operations clients. Will draft, review and negotiate consent decrees with a variety of federal and state agencies. Interact professionally, effectively, and diplomatically with regulatory agencies administrative bodies, customers, external legal counsel, external environmental professionals, community representatives, and other outside stakeholders for the purpose of resolving environmental issues and/or disputes. Proactively identify risk to the company and together with senior attorneys identify creative ways to minimize risk. Research and resolve general environmental matters affecting the company and the various operating subsidiaries of the company. Under the supervision of senior attorneys, manage environmental litigation, including choosing appropriate outside counsel, overseeing their work, and handling cases in-house where appropriate. Must have a graduate or Bachelor s degree, JD, current law license and 3-5 years of experience focused on general environmental legal matters in a law firm or corporate setting. Should have general knowledge of CERCLA, RCRA, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, and analogous state and local laws and regulations. Must possess excellent legal research, verbal and written communication skills, knowledge of online legal research, and basic understanding of Microsoft Office suite. Seeking a high performing individual with demonstrated interest and experience in environmental law is needed. Ability to prioritize and efficiently handle multiple complex and challenging assignments and projects simultaneously in a timely and effective manner with limited oversight, judgment to evaluate when to ask for assistance or direction, and bring issues to a successful conclusion, while keeping the Vice President Environmental, Senior Attorneys, Environmental clients, and business clients appropriately informed, is required. Experience handling a diverse portfolio of environmental matters, e.g. transactional work, environmental litigation, environmental permitting, enforcement matters, is also desired.
