Assistant General Counsel, Tax

Assistant General Counsel, Tax The candidate will be responsible for legal activities, insight, and effective leadership intended to minimize the tax burden of the company. Will join an engaged team of tax professionals who work to reduce company's exposure to tax risk, ensure ongoing Company compliance with applicable state and federal tax laws and will consult regularly with the Company s business teams and other members of Company's law department to maintain a cohesive tax strategy. This role reports to the Deputy General Counsel, Tax. Responsibilities: Support company s business strategy, goals and objectives by providing high quality legal advice with particular focus on the company s U.S. insurance business; Provide company s Corporate Tax Department with research, planning and legal advice to minimize company s exposure, and help develop sound tax return positions; Provide legal support5 for all aspects of Federal tax compliance, including responses to Internal Revenue Service audit questions, and the preparation of materials for appeals or litigation; Manage various operational tax inquiries and issues as they develop within company s business operations; Provide technical support to company s Government Affairs group to evaluate the potential impact of proposed tax legislation and regulations for the company. Actively participate in insurance industry forums and committees, such as the American Insurance Association. Provide senior management with advice, legal opinions, memorandums and recommendations pertaining to tax issues relevant to the company. The candidate must have significant corporate tax law experience (prior experience with Subchapter L a plus, but not required). Insurance experience strongly preferred. Should have J.D. degree from a recognized institution plus 8+ years in a respected law firm(s), government and/or corporate tax law department (or similar experience). Experience advising high level corporate executives or clients. Excellent judgment. Excellent legal and business acumen; ability to think like a business person, to integrate legal and business issues and to partner with business leaders. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to travel, as necessary, to attend conferences, industry meetings, trade events, etc.
