Senior Employment Counsel The candidate will Provide legal support and counsel on employment law issues to human resources staff and legal department leadership. Will recommend and implement best practices and proactive strategies consistent with legal requirements and emerging trends to minimize liability and promote employee satisfaction. Proactively identify recurring employment issues and provide advice and counsel to legal department leaders on complex issues having impact or potential impact across organizational entities. Collaborate with Human Resources and other stakeholders to develop, review and revise as required, company policies and procedures impacting labor and employment. Select, manage and oversee outside counsel in employment matters and other assigned subject areas and within the parameters set by the General Counsel. Investigate and respond to administrative charges. Conduct legal research and analysis as necessary. Draft, review and/or negotiate contracts as necessary. Direct audits of employment law in defined areas of risk. Devise, conduct and/or oversee employee training as needed on relevant issues. May provide advice and counsel on benefit plans, executive compensation, mergers & acquisitions and corporate governance, as directed by the General Counsel. Review and approve discovery documents, litigation pleadings, motions and briefs prepared by outside or internal counsel. Attend depositions, mediations, conferences, trials and meetings with regulators as necessary. Pursue ongoing professional development in current areas of responsibility and in relevant, emerging areas of the law. Assist General Counsel with identifying and developing department initiatives as appropriate. Prepare reports for senior management and provide recommendations, as appropriate. May make employment decisions and/or recommendations on hiring, improvement plans, transfers, promotions, corrective actions, terminations, pay adjustments, etc. May coordinate and manage the work of employees by directing members of the team to meet the area s goals. Audit regularly to ensure standard operating procedures are being adhered to. Manage employee performance and assist employees in making improvements to their performance through coaching, mentoring and administering performance reviews. Recommend, plan and/or implement employee training and skill development activities. Audit, maintain and ensure employee time-keeping and absentee records are accurate. Communicate company and departmental issues and goals and facilitate employee growth and development through weekly team meetings, regular individual employee meetings, coaching, training, and company-offered learning opportunities. Manage resources to optimize equipment, facilities, employees, methods and materials. JD degree from an accredited ABA (American Bar Association) law school is required. Should have 10+ years of employment law and litigation experience, preferably in a multi-state environment and in a related industry. License to practice law and in good standing under the Bar of any state that enables admission to practice as in-house counsel in Wisconsin or Florida is required. Proven experience interacting with all levels of corporate management is essential.
