Corporate Attorney - CDS The candidate will contribute to the overall achievement of Custom Disability Solutions objectives by providing timely, accurate and cost-effective legal advice and consulting support to help manage and mitigate risk across all CDS departments. Will respond to discovery requests, attends mediation or settlement conferences and legal proceedings as necessary and makes appropriate litigation strategy recommendations. Selects, retains and manages defense counsel in a cost-effective, efficient and effective manner, or provides input to client and defense counsel selected by client, in instances where clients choose counsel. Serves as a resource for all Claims and Appeals personnel regarding potential legal issues arising in the proper adjudication of claims. Serves as a resource for other CDS personnel regarding potential legal issues and questions that arise in conduct of operations, development of new products and on miscellaneous legal issues. Responsible for the management of litigated claim files by performing file analysis; negotiation; attendance at court-ordered hearings and various other duties related to the handling of litigated claims. Provides oversight and direction for appeals and quality review functions;. Responds to inquiries promptly, effectively and courteously. Testifies as necessary in legal proceedings. Develops and implements training programs as necessary to pro-actively mitigate or reduce potential legal risk in CDS operations, or to meet regulatory and client contractual requirements. Monitors results and trends regarding disability litigation in the courts; presents findings to staff and CDS management on periodic basis. Develops strong working relationship with the head of Claims and other department heads to provide legal guidance in the development of departmental procedures and practices. As requested, provides legal opinion in CDS reinsurance and other agreement matters. Other duties, as requested by management.

The candidate should preferably have JD degree, with experience in the management of ERISA and non-ERISA disability claim litigation. Disability claims operational experience strongly preferred. Must have 3 years of supervisory experience, preferably in the area of group disability claims or appeals processing. Proven ability to work well in a high-visibility, public-oriented environment, with excellent written and verbal communication skills needed. Proven ability to work with Microsoft Windows. Experience with Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required.
