Senior Legal Counsel, Environmental and Safety The candidate will report to the Senior Assistant General Counsel for Global Environment and Safety. Will be responsible for providing regulatory compliance assistance and legal advice to a wide range of businesses worldwide. Assist the Safety Health Environment and Quality (SHEQ) group in monitoring international regulations and advising on major capital projects. Provide support to the Corporate Real Estate group. Monitor federal laws and regulations and advise business on significant permit and other regulatory compliance issues. Defend environmental or safety compliance enforcement actions or litigation brought against the company by government agencies or private parties. Advise on environmental due diligence and negotiate environmental contract terms in major commercial or real estate transactions. Review and advise on environmental and safety liabilities associated with major capital projects. Provide legal counsel on Superfund matters and cost recovery actions associated with remediation of properties. Work with SHEQ teams to investigate and report on environmental and safety incidents, review and comment on SHEQ policies, programs and communication. Assist in reporting for corporate sustainability report and related initiatives. Provide practical guidance and legal advice to the U.S. Real Estate Group to include: providing legal assistance in connection with environmental matters, drafting and negotiating purchase and sale agreements and commercial leases and subleases.

The candidate should have a Bachelor's degree and a law degree from an accredited and nationally recognized institution. Must have 10+ years of legal experience required in the practice of environmental, health and safety law, preferably involving the chemical and/or petroleum industries, as well as prior real estate experience. Must have a good working knowledge of U.S. environmental regulations, permitting and compliance enforcement matters, experience in environmental due diligence and remediation projects, as well as real estate transactions and commercial leasing matters. Should have some experience in the U.S. handling personnel safety and process safety regulatory issues and OSHA inspections and enforcement. Prior international experience is preferred. Client counseling experience is critical. Excellent communication and writing skills are essential. Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations associated with the position to include: Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, CERCLA, Oil Pollution Act, TSCA, FIFRA, OSHA Process Safety Management standard, EPA Risk Management Plan program, DOT/PHMSA pipeline and vehicle regulations, OSHA standards under 29 U.S.C 1910, and equivalent state environmental and safety regulations.
