Senior Counsel, Product and Privacy The candidate reporting directly to the General Counsel, focuses on advising our product, engineering, security, and other teams on a variety of issues, including privacy, data security, marketing, or regulatory matters. Will in the past have had success: (1) managing multiple projects/deals and driving them to completion autonomously within required timeframes; (2) adopting builder's mindset of figuring stuff out even without prior (or direct) experience in that area; (3) developing trusted partnerships within your team and with key stakeholders; (4) identifying use cases that could benefit from repeatable processes and proposing what those processes could look like (and how they could be adopted), especially for product and privacy/data protection processes; and (5) approaching situations and people with curiosity and willingness to learn, commit, and contribute to solving for immediate as well as long-term solutions. Responsibilities: Partnering with product and engineering teams to provide guidance on legal issues related to product design, development, and operations, with specific attention to privacy and data protection and open source. Creating and developing legal processes and documentation to support new product or other business initiatives. Designing, improving, and implementing global privacy and data protection compliance program and processes, as well as educating our teams about relevant privacy and data protection laws. Drafting and maintaining privacy and data protection policies, notices or other documentation, as well as managing privacy and data protection terms in standard contractual arrangements and supporting the commercial legal team in negotiations with customers. Working closely with the product, engineering, security and IT teams to support our security initiatives, frameworks, and requirements. Supporting business development team with drafting and negotiating commercial agreements in support of product or new business initiatives. Supporting procurement team on privacy and data protection issues in connection with our purchase of various products and services. Assisting with managing patents and trademarks and coordinating with outside counsel. Monitoring and advising on regulatory and industry developments, including trends in privacy and security laws, regulatory guidance, enforcement actions, and public policy. Providing cross-functional leaders with pragmatic and strategic advice to minimize legal risks while advancing business goals and initiatives. Partnering with key stakeholders across the organization to build strong relationships across levels. Identifying opportunities to centralize knowledge and create scalable processes to increase visibility and expedite communication/alignment/execution. The candidate should have J.D. from an accredited law school and an active bar membership. Must have 5+ years of related legal experience, with a focus on privacy and/or product counseling, preferably advising companies in the software / SaaS sector. Experience working at a technology company or working with technology clients strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of privacy and data protection laws (including CCPA and GDPR) required. Comfortable with technology and technical terminology; experience working directly with product development and engineering teams preferred. Must have excellent drafting skills and ability to adapt legal requirements in balanced, creative and pragmatic ways, consistent with company objectives, policies, and processes. Should be Excellent negotiator, able to effectively navigate issues externally and internally, with proven ability to influence. Must have clear and concise communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
