Assistant General Counsel, U.s. Claims And Litigation

Assistant General Counsel, U.S. Claims, and Litigation The candidate will work across functions and lines of business managing complex claims, litigation, outside counsel, and collaborating with the company's senior management in managing risks emanating from litigation matters within the company. Be directly involved in high-stakes lawsuits, and you ll effectively analyze risk, perform early case assessments, problem-solve rather than litigate at all costs, and knowledgeably select and manage first-rate outside trial counsel. Regularly interface with the company's finance leaders and insurance carriers. Handle responsibilities associated with overseeing a major portfolio of claims, including directing trial and settlement strategy for complex litigation, managing costs, and budgets, negotiating alternative fee arrangements, setting reserves, managing electronic discovery requirements, supervising outside counsel, and completing various internal reports in a timely fashion. Report to the Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, Global Litigation. The candidate must have a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school, a solid academic background, and an active license to practice law, and 15+ years of legal experience practicing law in a law firm and/or in house specializing in handling all forms of litigation and dispute resolution, including arbitrations, mediations and federal courts of the claim. Experience handling large and complex litigation, superior knowledge of construction and professional liability law, standard forms of contract and practice, and familiarity with insurance-related issues required. Ability to provide input into risk management, influence record management practices, gather lessons learned from litigation and other litigation prevention activities. Ability to access risk and balance legal and business considerations required. Experience managing and improving processes and driving continuous improvement. Trial experience preferred. Experience with global arbitration forums such as ICC, UNCITRAL, UK, and AAA. In-House experience, preferably in a global, multi-cultural environment, including experience managing complex cross-border claims and litigation. Experience with government contracts and intellectual property. Experience dealing with litigation and claims in the context of a joint venture or consortium. Experience dealing with insurance carriers. Experience working in a matrixed organization with cultural diversity.
