Senior Counsel, U.S. Claims and Litigation

Senior Counsel, U.S. Claims and Litigation Duties: Work across functions and lines of business managing claims, litigation, outside counsel and collaborating with management in managing risks emanating from litigation matters within the company. Responsible for managing a portfolio of product liability, commercial, auto and mass tort claims. Effectively analyze risk, perform early case assessments, problem-solve rather than litigate at all costs, and knowledgeably select and manage outside counsel. Interface with finance leaders and insurance carriers.

Qualifications: JD Degree from an accredited law school, a solid academic background, and an active license to practice law. 10+ years of legal experience practicing law in a law firm and/or in-house specializing in the handling of litigation and dispute resolution, including arbitrations, mediations and federal courts of claim. Experience handling claims and litigation, knowledge of construction and professional liability law, standard forms of contract and practice and familiarity with insurance-related issues. Demonstrated ability to handle responsibilities associated with overseeing a major portfolio of claims, including directing trial and settlement strategy for claims and litigation, managing costs and budgets, negotiating alternative fee arrangements, setting reserves, managing electronic discovery requirements, selecting, retaining and supervising outside counsel and completing various internal reports in a timely fashion. Willingness to work collaboratively with others at all levels of the business both within and outside of the Legal Department, including: business clients, finance and risk management. Ability to provide input into risk management, influence record management practices, gather lessons learned  from litigation and other litigation prevention activities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, persuasive, responsible and accessible. Experience managing and improving processes and driving continuous improvement. Ability to access risk and balance legal and business considerations. A strong work ethic and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Uncompromising ethics. Ability to travel as needed. Ideally, will also have: Trial experience. In-House experience, preferably in a global, multi-cultural environment, including experience managing complex cross-border claims and litigation. Experience dealing with litigation and claims in the context of a joint venture or consortium. Experience dealing with insurance carriers. Experience working in a matrixed organization with cultural diversity.
