Senior Counsel, Litigation Responsibilities: Protect and represent the corporation and its subsidiaries in litigation matters across a wide-range of subject areas, including, but not limited to, professional malpractice claims (broking, reinsurance, ERISA fiduciary claims) Identify preventative measures for avoidance of future litigation based on circumstances experienced in litigation, including conducting training sessions for business units. Analyze new lawsuits and determine initial litigation strategy. Analyze and advise business units on pre-litigation claims or circumstances. Evaluate exposure and potential liability and recommend course of action to management. Seek efficient resolution of litigation matters and exercise sound judgment. Evaluate and implement most efficient use of in-house and outside firm resources. Retain and supervise outside counsel when necessary. Advise management of operating company and law department of strategy and status on a regular basis. Provide technical / professional advice or policy or contract interpretation on complex, non-recurring issues. Conduct research, prepare pleadings, take and defend depositions, when appropriate. Participate in trials and arbitrations. Act as decision maker in mediations. Assess and recommend post-trial strategy. Respond to requests for information from department members and risk management regarding status of cases, reserves and other information. Coordinate, with paralegal and/or outside counsel support, on providing appropriate and timely responses to subpoenas and/or regulatory requests. Oversee administrative/paralegal efforts to gather responsive documents from business units. Close litigation and subpoena matters in prompt fashion once resolved. Consistently produce high-quality work product. Qualifications: JD degree from an accredited U.S. law school, bar admission in Illinois. Strong academic credentials. 5-7 years of strong legal experience preferably in a law firm or in-house litigation position. Significant experience in providing counseling and advice is preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting. High level of self-direction and sound judgment. Ability to provide practical, timely solutions to business partners, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
