Property Litigation Counsel - Claims Legal The candidate will report to VP, Claims Counsel, and support the Property Claims Department in the handling of litigation against the company arising from first-party homeowners and commercial property claims. Will retain and oversee outside coverage counsel representing the Group and implementing the strategy for complex property and coverage litigation against the company throughout the US. Work with Claims Legal and Property Claims to develop litigation/file disposition strategy. Retain outside coverage counsel to represent the company in nationwide first-party coverage litigation arising from homeowners and commercial property claims. Within authority limit, supervise the retention and management of, as well as payments to, outside counsel, actively utilizing litigation management plans and budgets. Direct and manage assigned caseload of litigated files involving property claim disputes, extra-contractual claims, and declaratory judgment actions. Manage and control reserves, and expenses associated with assigned caseload in compliance with company guidelines. Negotiate and authorize appropriate settlements within designated authority. On occasion, attend mediations, settlement conferences, court hearings and trials. As a member of the Claims Counsel team, assist claims leadership by identifying trends, providing training and the continued development of the discipline on technical matters. Perform other legal and litigation duties as assigned. J.D. degree from an accredited law school is required. Must have 5+ years of relevant claims and/or legal experience, which focused on first-party property claims with an exposure of $250,000 or more including both primary and excess losses. Should have State Bar license that is in good standing. Must have insurance litigation experience in connection with first-party property claims.
