Senior Counsel - Environmental

Senior Counsel - Environmental Duties: Primary legal counsel to the Corporation regarding environmental and worker and product safety matters, including environmental litigation and compliance, OSHA, and related matters. Provide legal advice on environmental law matters, including regulatory compliance, permitting, enforcement actions and litigation matters. Draft and/or review of legal documents, including position statements, responses to enforcement actions and other court or agency actions. Conduct and participate in negotiations with federal and state governments or citizen groups in an effort to resolve matters. Represent Corporation in administrative permit or rulemaking hearings, enforcement actions, appeals and other legal proceedings, managing and working with outside counsel, as appropriate. Advise and counsel on interpretation of contractual environmental provisions in commercial and real estate transactions. Support remediation projects at both legacy and current operating plants including representing the Corporation in multi-company remediation matters. Provide legal advice and counsel for highly complex, technical and/or sensitive issues to the Business Unit or other client groups as necessary. Work closely with Business Units, technical subject matter experts, other in-house counsel and outside law firms to facilitate effective regulatory compliance and the efficient resolution of environmental legal issues. Support the environmental aspects of acquisitions or divestitures. As assigned, supervise litigation matters. Lead role in advocating for and/or negotiating legal positions on significant environmental matters,and is expected to be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Work cooperatively with the legal department, across business and operational functions and with various other stakeholders.

Qualifications: Law Degree from leading law school. Illinois Bar admission. Must have 6 years of experience as a lawyer at a first-tier law firm or law department, with experience in environmental and OSHA matters, including environmental litigation and regulatory experience, as well as general experience in commercial law. Must have experience and expertise in environmental law. Experience with environmental regulatory authorities at the federal, state or local levels. Outstanding legal and communication skills; superior judgment and problem-solving; strong interpersonal skills. The ability to resolve complex environmental issues in creative effective ways.
