Privacy Counsel The candidate will be providing legal advice to internal business partners, including advising on privacy compliance across all aspects of global privacy law and regulation. Ensuring data use and handling complies with all applicable privacy and consumer protection laws, including laws applicable to employees and employee data, in all global locations of businesses. Supporting commercial attorneys on privacy and data protection issues in contract negotiations, including data protection agreements, across our businesses in various industries. Advising product, marketing, engineering, human resources, and other business teams on relevant privacy matters concerning product development, digital advertising, marketing, data uses, and governance, and working with them to find creative ways to mitigate privacy risks while achieving business goals. Partnering closely with Rakuten's Information Security team to assess and address any privacy and security risks and build new compliance processes where necessary. Conducting privacy due diligence reviews and data protection impact assessments, and creating and guiding integration plans for potential and completed acquisitions and partnerships. Tracking and analyzing new, pending, and proposed domestic and global privacy, data protection, and consumer legislation that could impact the businesses and recommend any resulting modifications to current practices. Supporting continuous improvements of templates, policies, and processes to help streamline and simplify the contracting and privacy compliance processes. Conducting periodic privacy trainings across the company. J.D. from a nationally recognized law school and active membership in at least one state bar required. 3+ years of experience practicing privacy law or employment law required. Strong knowledge of GDPR, CCPA, and familiarity with other domestic and global privacy laws, regulations, and industry guidelines, especially those relevant for ecommerce, ad tech, and Internet companies, as well as those governing collection, use, and retention of employee data required. Experience designing and implementing business-friendly programs and processes to meet legal requirements; specific management of a privacy or other compliance program is a plus. Strong collaboration and communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally and globally with a wide variety of people, at all levels in the organization required. Strong work ethic with exceptional organizational and prioritization skills; Track record of handling multiple projects with competing, tight deadlines required. Ability to work independently and to think and execute both strategically and tactically; Track record of taking initiative required. CIPP certification(s) preferred.
