Family Law Attorney Duties: Trial Advocacy. Carry a caseload providing high-quality direct legal representation to relative caregivers in custody and related cases in Superior Court. Zealously advocate for clients in all cases through frequent client communication, thorough investigation, careful litigation planning, and representation at hearings. Attend all court dates and timely draft and file all appropriate pleadings. Achieve best possible outcomes for clients through negotiated settlement or trial Caregiver Intakes, Referrals, and Brief Advice or Service. Handle relative caregiver intakes as assigned to determine whether a potential client has a family law legal issue where can assist. Enter intake information into case management system and conduct intakes according to program guidelines. Provide caregivers with brief advice, brief service, and/or referrals as assigned. Conduct legal research and/or identify other community resources as needed Education and Advocacy. Provide educational information to caregivers and community partners about kinship care. Prepare and give presentations on kinship care. Assist with updated Relative Caregiver Resource Guide. Assist with advocacy initiatives through researching issues, drafting white papers and testimony, and networking with other community advocates. Work with Relative Caregiver Community Board on systemic advocacy initiatives. Develop or update outreach, training, and education materials as assigned to improve the efficacy and timeliness of legal service delivery to client community.
Qualifications: JD degree from accredited law school. DC Bar membership or immediate eligibility to waive in required. 2+ years experience with legal services. Experience that will be considered includes job experience, law school clinics, clerkships, and internships. A demonstrated commitment to social, economic, and racial justice?. Cultural humility and commitment to understanding and respecting other cultural experiences and points of view. Strong legal analysis, research, writing, and oral advocacy skills. Ability to be self-reflective and give and receive constructive and corrective feedback. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills. Demonstrated capacity to work independently and collaboratively. Intellectual aptitude and curiosity. Commencing in January 2022.
