Counsel (Transportation and Logistics) The candidate will provide legal support to the corporation's motor carrier, logistics, and shared services management teams and for other related projects as assigned. Provide legal counsel at the earliest stages of business discussions due to the complexity of the service, e.g., transportation services, supply chain and logistics services, reverse goods management or procurement sector, and for the legal risks embedded therein. Communicate directly with the motor carrier and logistic group's management, affiliated company functional areas, and outside counsel. Under the supervision of the VP Legal, provide legal counsel across the various operating companies and support functional areas for the identification, analysis and communication of key risk areas throughout the deal cycle and provide advice on the effectiveness of the solutions and mitigation strategies developed by the operations, pricing and procurement teams on key risk issues. Advise company personnel of any changes in laws as required. Prepare and review proposed transportation and logistics service contracts (brokerage and warehousing agreements), motor carrier, air freight forwarder, ocean freight forwarder and other related service contracts, license agreements, settlements and other legal instruments to safeguard the corporation's interests. Keep abreast and advise management of relevant regulatory requirements affecting the operations of the transportation and logistics sectors. Provide legal counsel and assistance in other functional areas as assigned.
The candidate should have a legal degree from an ABA-accredited law school and admission to the Kansas Bar or admission under Rule 712, as applicable. Should have 3-5 years of legal experience in transportation and contract law, including a good understanding of the legal framework governing all modes of transportation and brokerage operations. Strong legal research and writing skills. Experience relating to bids and proposals, drafting and negotiating legal documents to include contracts, subcontracts, contract amendments, solicitations and similar documents. Ability to identify the legal risk of contemplated litigation or disputes in which the corporation is involved. Ability to exercise independent judgment with little supervision and to work with and maintain confidential and sensitive information. Strong communication, organizational and decision-making skills.
