Immigration Justice Project - Staff Attorney Duties: Provides legal services, including pro se legal assistance, orientation, and direct representation, to immigrants and asylum seekers facing removal. Provides group and individual legal orientations to immigrants and asylum seekers in immigration removal proceedings. Regularly appears in immigration court. Represents clients seeking immigration relief such as asylum, T-Visas, U-Visas, cancellation of removal, and other relief as appropriate. Mentors pro bono attorneys, volunteers, legal interns, and legal assistants, as needed. Develops and maintains legal competency relating to immigration legal services. Builds and maintains relationships with local stakeholders. Observe ethical practices relating to confidentiality and all other applicable legal ethics standards. Maintains case files, documentation, and data integrity using the division's case management system. Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications: Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited law school. Licensed to practice law in a U.S. state or territory, with current Bar membership in good standing. Fluent in English and Spanish in written and spoken forms. Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office products and Google tools. Comfortable with public speaking and frequent communication with clients and their supporters, government counsel, court staff, and immigration officers and judges. Preferred: Licensed to practice law and member in the State Bar of California with one year's experience, preferably in immigration law. Prior work experience with immigrants, asylum seekers, or refugees. Prior volunteer, community, or work experience regarding immigration or detention. Prior non-profit experience, particularly involving immigration detention.
