Product and Privacy Counsel Duties: Provide legal guidance on product development, including privacy and security by design, and ensure regular updates of various terms of services and privacy policies. Be a generalist capable of learning and going wide and deep on all issues of law (e.g. privacy, security, IP, consumer protection, state and federal education regulations, open source) pertaining to your products and focus areas. Partner closely with the Info-security team to improve and execute our security incident response policies and processes. Provide strategic and tactical support for marketing, communications and policy engagement efforts. Partner with and manage outside counsel. Develop and implement privacy training and awareness content and programs and support related initiatives across the CZI organization. Contribute to general team and organizational operations, including taking on special projects or backfilling other functions, as necessary.
Qualifications: 3+ years of law firm or in-house experience; JD Degree required and an active membership in at least one U.S. state bar, preferably California. Ideal candidates will have prior product counsel experience at a tech company, or experience with privacy regulations (e.g. FERPA, COPPA, GDPR, HIPAA etc.). Familiarity with and a deep curiosity to learn more about technologies. Sense of humor, initiative, and an ability to roll up your sleeves and get things done while thinking strategically and creatively. A learning and growth mindset coupled with humility and mission- and team-oriented sensibilities.
