Employment Counsel, New Verticals Duties: Become a trusted advisor and educator for your business partners on labor- and employment-related matters. Ensure compliance with all applicable labor and employment laws and regulations, such as wage & hour, employment discrimination, workplace safety, FMLA, ADA, workers compensation, and workplace notices & training. Develop strong, cross-functional partnerships, including with Human Resources, Employee & Labor Relations, Compliance, Payroll, Leaves, and Benefits. Participate in and influence your business partners decision-making process, as appropriate, and in a manner that reflects the Legal Team's high standards of ethics, compliance, and practicality. Own legal matters and projects ranging from basic to complex, and recognize when to elevate certain matters to other members of the Legal Team. Supervise, manage and evaluate outside counsel on employment-related matters including litigation/arbitration.
Qualifications: Must have a JD degree from an accredited law school and be licensed to practice law in at least one US state. Should have 4+ years of substantive labor and employment experience with a corporate legal department or a nationally recognized law firm. Experience in counseling clients on labor and employment matters. Great communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills within and across departments and externally; and proactive in providing counsel to clients. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in at least one of the advising in retail, convenience, restaurant, grocery, warehouse, or another field with a high volume of hourly employees; Managing employment matters in both the United States and Canada; and Building compliance systems from the ground up, ideally at a start-up or a new division of an established company.
